Yeah, the next games are soon but I was away all weekend....sue me.
Here they are..better late than never.
1. Calgary Destroyers
Previous: 1 High: 1 Low: 1
Definitive win over a decent Prince George team keeps the defending champs in top spot. Showcased a dominant and consistent running attack and a good defence.
2. Niagara Nightmare
Previous: n/a High: 2 Low: 2
A quality victory over what looks to be a good KC Gorillas team keeps the Nightmare high in the rankings. Also showed a dominant rushing attack and RB Cragar Koloski already looks to be a quarter of the way to a rushing title with a 249 yard performance.
3. Saskatchewan Thrashers
Previous: 4 High: 3 Low: 4
Showed a smothering defence in a 16-3 victory over the Alberta Irukandji. The Thrashers will need to show more punch on offense to get past the better teams in A5.
4. Kelowna Bulls
Previous: 3 High: 3 Low: 4
Played a tough Unsavoury Gentlemen team for their first W of the year. WR Golden Gopher WAS their offense, with 22 catches for over 200 yards, but what happens when they meet an elite corner? They have to be concerned with their run D, giving up 7.1 yards per carry to UG’s starting runner.
5. Shilo Silly Nannies
Previous: 6 High: 5 Low: 6
Got a nice W versus an improved Saskatoon Sasquatch team. Didn’t do anything spectacular but did everything well. Next game against KC should be an entertaining one.
6. Chilliwack Care Bears
Previous: 9 High: 6 Low: 9
Big leap up the rankings for the Care Bears. Ruled the clock and time of possession and ground out a solid win against the Manitoba Lions.
7. Genosha X-Men
Previous: 5 High: 5 Low: 7
Many of the Psycho Penguins bailed when the team relocated to Genosha, but it didn’t stop the X-Men from showing complete dominance over the Beavers. They’re well placed to go back to back wins with the Northside Hangmen up next.
8. Kansas City Gorillas
Previous: 8 High: 7 Low: 8
Yes, they lost their season opener…but they dominated in the first quarter against what looks to be one of the best teams in the conference. They will end the season higher than number 8…I’d bet money on it.
9. Toronto Lockdowns
Previous: 12 High: 9 Low: 12
The Lockdowns ground out a 34-27 win against the Hangmen…and I do mean ground out, passing just 11 times. Chris Ferriera is among the early rushing leaders but don’t expect him to duplicate the performance against the Destroyers up next.
10. Unsavory Gentlemen
Previous: 10 High: 10 Low: 10
The UG stay where they are after losing to the Bulls. They claim they are for real this year and played the Bulls tough enough for anyone to realize that this franchise’s first win is on the horizon. Odds are good that it will be this week against Alberta.
11. Saskatoon Sasquatch
Previous: 8 High: 8 Low: 11
The ‘Quatch just couldn’t get their offense going against a solid Shilo team. Their defence kept them in the game but a short missed FG and a red zone fumble kept the Sasquatch from bringing themselves back.
12. Manitoba Lions
Previous: 12 High: 12 Low: 12
They gave the Care Bears a game. The combo of QB Hound and WR Potter will be a regular hookup for this team.
13. Prince George Warriors
Previous: 13 High: 13 Low: 14
Got killed…but got killed by the best. Put forth a good effort against Calgary but simply could not stop them. Offense showed they could play though and the stats don’t look as onesided as the score.
14. Northside Hangmen
Previous: n/a High: 15 Low: 15
Active in FA…but in some seriously odd ways. They’ve got four starting quality running backs, yet only three defensive tackles who are all underleveled. The owner still has a lot of bucks in the bank account though, so maybe there will be some big defensive upgrades on the way.
15. Alberta Irukandji
Previous: 13 High: 13 Low: 15
Didn’t show a lot offensively against the Thrashers in a lacklustre affair. I know defence wins championships…but you’ll need to score more than three to get by a lot of folks.
16. Edmonton Beavers
Previous: 16 High: 16 Low: 16
Last time I said there’s nowhere to go but up. Well, I still say that. But I wouldn’t say it will be after this week against a tough Thrashers team. Sorry Beavers, but you’re in the basement for at least another week.
