It could call a penalty on a guy who's got NOBODY NEAR HIM.

It's totally random! LOL!

Yep...

That's my gripe. It needs to be based off something - like tackling, or vision, or whatever...

Lineman wasn't fast enough so he had to hold the DE to save his QBs life - fine, that's something that can be fixed.

Penalties in real life are USUALLY based on miss-matches. False start, for example... how many guys in front of Reggie White used to False Start to try and get that extra jump to protect against him.

How would you feel if nobody moves, yet the ref decided to call False Start because he hadn't met his quota for the game yet?

That's basically what we're dealing with here... hehe

It sounds kind of like the early 2000s madden games when they first started introducing penatlies as a big part of the game. It once called a holding penalty on Ahman Green when he was running the ball. . .

Here's my problem with penalties. It's the same problem I have in Madden.

Penalties only exist because of human error, or cheating. If you can find a way to positively remove the human error and cheating, why wouldn't you?

In madden, you can challenge calls for example, which is the dumbest thing in the world. Why do that? Why incorporate human error? Why not just have the refs make the right calls? This is a case of clearly over-thinking the realism aspect of Madden.

In my personal opinion, penalties should not exist in GLB, simply because there is no physical effort involved in moving the players around, so you can't possibly encourage bumping a receiver, or holding on a play. Sure, you can "discourage" it by pumping certain attributes, but I'd much rather have it removed entirely.

The only thing more lame than penalties is injuries. Injuries are realistic but I'm not paying $9 bucks every 45 days or so to boost a QB and then watch him go down with random ligament tear -- done for season.

Is it real? Sure. So is a meteor crashing down on davitrav's brain. Frankly I don't want either to occur.

But obviously I'm more concerned with injuries.

As you said,

With Madden you can literally influence a penalty being called. Now, when I play against my friends we always turn off certain penalties - like False Start, and Holding and Face Mask

Those penalties are "random occurrence" penalties in that game. Pass Interference is different, so is Encroachment/Offsides.

This system that is in now, however, is 100% random occurrence and I don't like that...
