Here's the playoff picture after 7 games for Canada A #2, with 1 game left to play.

The number in {brackets} next to each team is their "magic number." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_number_%28sports%29 ) Any combination of wins by your team or losses by the team you need to finish ahead of means you clinch a playoff spot.

EASTERN CONFERENCE
1 Lancaster Hustlas 7-0 [CLINCHED 1ST ROUND AT HOME] {1 for Top-2}
2 Puvirnituq Musketeers 7-0 [CLINCHED 1ST ROUND AT HOME] {1 for Top-2}
3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 6-1 [CLINCHED 1ST ROUND AT HOME]
4 Hamilton Lightning 6-1 [CLINCHED 1ST ROUND AT HOME]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
5 Quebec Quasars 4-3 {1}
6 Nova Scotia Snakes 4-3 {1}
7 Sudbury Mountain Lions 4-3 {1}
8 Antioch Inferno 4-3 {1}
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
9 Lincoln Lucky 3-4 {2}
10 Sacramento Terror 3-4 {2}
11 Niagara Assassins 3-4 {2}
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
12 Toronto Bobcats 2-5 [ELIMINATED]
13 Charlottetown Wildcats 2-5 [ELIMINATED]
14 S.W.O. Swamp Donkeys 1-6 [ELIMINATED]
15 Thunder Bay Shockers 0-7 [ELIMINATED]
16 Yellowknife Rented Mules 0-7 [ELIMINATED]

It's settled: the top 4 will be Lancaster, Puvirnituq, Notre Dame and Hamilton, though not neccessarily in that order. A 4-way tie is still possible, and with so few head-to-head matchups to use for tiebreakers, the playoff seedings could easily depend on points-scored or even points-against. Lancaster does have a win over Hamilton, and Puvirnituq has a win over Notre Dame, but that's it for head-to-heads among the top 4.

Meanwhile, Toronto and Charlottetown are out, but 7 teams are still alive in the race for the last 4 playoff spots. And just like with the top 4, the scarcity of head-to-head matchups also means points-scored could be the tie-breaker that settles these seeds. Looking at the head-to-heads, Quebec has wins over Antioch and Lincoln, Nova Scotia has wins over Antioch and Sacramento and an upset loss to Niagara, Sudbury has wins over Sacramento and Niagara, and Antioch has a win over Lincoln.

WESTERN CONFERENCE
1 Port Moody Megalodon 7-0 [CLINCHED #3 OR BETTER] {1 for Top-2}
2 Laval Lumberjacks 7-0 [CLINCHED #3 OR BETTER] {1 for Top-2}
3 Vancouver Crush 6-1 [CLINCHED #6 OR BETTER] {1 for Top-3}
4 Montreal Raptors 5-2 [CLINCHED PLAYOFF SPOT] {1 for Top-6}
5 Tradewest Battletoads 5-2 [CLINCHED PLAYOFF SPOT] {1 for Top-6}
6 Saskatchewan Wolf Pack 5-2 [CLINCHED PLAYOFF SPOT] {1 for Top-6}
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
7 Québec City Dirtbags 4-3 W {1}
8 Listowel Huskies 4-3 W {1}
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
9 Ogopogo Lake Monsters 3-4 W {2}
10 Gaffney Indians 3-4 L {2}
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
11 B.K. Thunderbirds 2-5 [ELIMINATED]
12 Thunder Bay Titans 2-5 [ELIMINATED]
13 Memphis Maulers 2-5 [ELIMINATED]
14 Alberta Alchemists 1-6 [ELIMINATED]
15 Bologna Towers 0-7 [ELIMINATED]
16 Westwood Bruins 0-7 [ELIMINATED]

The top 6 are very fluid right now, with lots of chances for ties and very few opportunities to break those ties using head-to-head, meaning points-scored could become very important. Looking at the head-to-heads, Laval has a win over Vancouver, Vancouver has wins over Montreal and Saskatchewan, Montreal has wins over Tradewest and Québec City, Tradewest has a win over Listowel, Québec City has wins over Listowel and Gaffney, and Ogopogo has a win over Gaffney.

Meanwhile, BK, Thunder Bay, Memphis and Alberta are all out.

Damn these tiebreakers favoring offensive teams vs. defensive. Lancaster pretty much has the 1st seed locked up, thanks to getting to play Yellowknife and the resulting 111-0 win. Points scored are 320 to 233 Lancaster. Guess we will just have to come into Lancaster and whoop up. Points against are 62 to 33 for Puvirnituq, but it won't come to that.

For the other tiebreakers in the East:

ND vs. Hamilton: Scored = 251 vs. 215 Against = 70 vs. 73

QQ, NS, Sudbury, Antioch: Scored = 231, 170, 211, 166 Against = 145, 112, 121, 105

Lincoln, Sacra, Niagara: Scored = 173, 152, 130 Against = 141, 151, 141

Good luck all.

Since we have such a shortened season I was curious what the tiebreaker would be like if we did points scored AGAINST COMMON OPPONENTS as the tiebreaker instead of total points scored. I only did this for the 1 seed because I'm lazy.

Puvi vs. Hamil: Scored: 87 vs. 119 Against: 3 vs. 33

There were only 3 common opponents and I would still complain that they played the common opponents early while we played them late when they were more put together Either way we will hopefully settle it on the field.

Not quite.

Let's say the top 4 teams all finish 7-1. There's only two head-to-heads there, not enough to full sort them out. Then it would come down to points-scored, and that would depend on the scores of the final game. That would give Notre Dame or Hamilton an outside shot at taking #1.

Well, Lancaster has a 2-5 opponent next, but upsets happen in this game sometimes. And Puvirnituq's opponent is 5-2, so a loss wouldn't be much of a stretch.

So simply if we win we are in but if we lose things can get messy? And it doesnt matter what Lincoln does but only what niagara and Sacramento do?

I hope we can just win and avoid all the craziness.

With 320 points scored, Lancaster has pretty much clinched the 1 seed. I'd say that with about 99.9% certainty. There's little to no way any of the 3 teams will make up a 70 point difference in points ND plays the worst Western team MAYBE

Ah, but I go mathematically... which means if it isn't 100%, it's not clinched.

Assuming "we" is Antioch, yes.

What really matters is how many teams get involved in a tie, and which teams in particular. If you get into a 2-team direct tie with Lincoln, you'd win that on a head-to-head tie breaker. But a 3-or-more team tie that happens to include Antioch, Lincoln and some other teams could get really messy.

Just win, baby. Let the rest sort itself out.
