Currently the Pass Awareness stat seems to control both the speed with which a QB goes through their reads, and their ability to asses the risk in the throw they're making. This suggestion would separate those two things in one of a couple ways.
1. Add two tactics: Progression Speed & Throw Window.
- Progression Speed: Fast, Medium, Slow.
-- Simply how quickly the player goes through their reads and how quickly they move on from their #1 read similar to how Pass Awareness works currently.
- Throw Window: Cautious, Medium, Risky.
-- What is the accepted window the QB is willing to throw in.
In this scenario Pass Awareness is either removed or used to determine how accurately/quickly the QB calculates the risk of the throw.
Example 1: A QB with high Pass Awareness, Fast Progression Speed, and Cautious Throw Window will move through their reads quickly, accurately calculate the risk of the throw, but only throw when the throw has a high % of completion/low risk of incompletion or interception. This QB may have a lower Pass Power in order to favor Pass Awareness, and be built with minimizing risk in mind. Therefore it's a QB that may make less "big" plays, but also makes less mistakes.
Example 2: A QB with low/mid Pass Awareness, Medium Progression Speed, and Risky Throw Window takes longer to get through their reads, does a decent job of assessing the risk of the pass, and is willing to put the ball into tighter windows/into harms way. This QB may be built with a big arm, and more accuracy. Their risk is mitigated by their ability to rifle the ball into smaller windows. They may have more turnovers, but also have more explosive plays.
2. Add add just the Throw Window tactic.
- Throw Window: Cautious, Medium, Risky
-- What is the accepted window the QB is willing to throw in.
This scenario keeps Pass Awareness largely the same as it is, going through their reads and assessing risk. However it alters the QB's tolerance to throw the ball based on that risk.
Example: A QB with high Pass Awareness and Pass Power, and a Risky Throw Window goes through their reads quickly and assesses the risk of the throw as it is now. They however are willing to take more risks in their throws; leading to a true Gunslinger mentality.
3. Add just the Progression Speed tactic.
- Progression Speed: Fast, Medium, Slow.
-- Simply how quickly the player goes through their reads and how quickly they move on from their #1 read similar to how Pass Awareness works currently.
This scenario removes the Progression Speed from Pass Awareness. Instead making PA only calculate the risk of the throw and giving more control to the QB's agent.
This would lead to lower Pass Awareness QBs naturally taking more risks with their throws, and higher Pass Awareness QBs taking less risks as Pass Awareness alone calculates the throw. Just giving the user more control over how long they focus on a WR.
The idea here is to separate the Physical act of scanning the field with the Mental/Personality Trait act of deciding to make the throw. Having a high Pass Awareness at the moment makes you scan the field faster, which could result in the QB moving on from reads before the play has time to develop. The remedy then would be the lower the Pass Awareness of the QB...but that could also make the QB make worse reads. Separating the two in some way leads to wider build variety.
