Or at least the defenders need to react a wee bit.

That one guy on the KO team should've grabbed it for an onside kick recovery, otherwise I'm ok with the play.

Yeah if defenders reacted in any way before returnguy touches the ball this is okay.

Not very realistic for it to bounce backward on a kickoff with as much force as it landed in the opposite direction, the only reason punts tend to do that is some have good backspin on them. Even if the ball hits perfectly to bounce backward without the backspin it won't be able to kill momentum at all, and even with a nasty backspin that much of a change of momentum is impossible with that approach angle.

But even so, if the players react to it, that's probably fine.

lol man kickoffs can very easily bounce in the manner this one did. Its all a matter of how the ball is moving and how it landed. I am with Myrik on this, ony issue to me is the defense not trying to recover it too.

First off, yeah if they react to this, the bounce is no problem.

But...

No, they can't, punts can, for the reasons I stated, the strongest of which is that to bounce back in the direction of travel a ball has to have a very high degree of backspin on it which is near impossible to do and still get distance on a kickoff. Also kickoffs travel forward a lot faster so the backspin would have to be a lot stronger than on a punt, which is impossible to do kicking off a tee. Even if the ball hit the ground on the perfect angle to dig in, without the backspin it just rolls forward with momentum on contact with the ground while it is bouncing.

The backspin lets the bounce happen while friction fights the forward momentum - and if the angle is right, can let the bounce impart a new direction of travel, but the faster the ball is travelling the more backspin is needed to fight that momentum, and to be able to bounce back as strongly as it hit (something a wall even has trouble doing as momentum is lost to the wall) it'd have to be spinning extremely fast so the backspin itself could also impart movement.

When I first saw it, I thought the ball bounced off a player on the receiving team

Seymour has had a few funny scripted bounce KO plays but this one was a weird one.
