Pocket Awareness says "the ability to see incoming blitzers and try to avoid them".

The question here is what does "avoid" mean. Does it mean avoid with footwork and scrambling, or does it mean avoid by getting rid of the ball? My guess would be that it means to avoid them with footwork and scrambling but I'm unsure.

Um...both? Neither?

It makes the input more accurate, it doesn't change the output equation.

I have no idea what that means

In other words it is only for the awareness of the situation. It is up to your QB to have the skills to get away or get the ball out of his hands. This just lets you know when you need to.

Yea, this doesn't make sense to me

I generally don't put much at all into this attribute, if you have a good O-Line and are calling the right plays, shouldn't be an issue

It triggers "On the Run" which is the best QB SA - that's probably the most important thing to know.

The more Awareness you have, the less Footwork you need.

Pretty much this. Although it also doesn't take much to trigger On the Run very often.

The 'avoid' part that is causing confusion basically means you have to notice a guy to be able to take action getting away from him. It's like better peripheral vision. You notice you're going to have to start moving to avoid someone sooner, or realize even that a block is about to break down with higher awareness.

And actually, to some extent, it does help avoidance as it helps you move earlier and in a direction that may help another blocker get to the pass rusher.

So yeah, it's just being aware, as the name suggests, has its benefits from taking high, has some drawbacks due to the already stretched cost of building a QB. I personally aim for 55, seem to allow a lot of the crafty things that buy time along with 35+ footwork, and makes sure that on the run fires to make up for the movement, but investing over that seems to bring limited returns back in comparison to cost imo.

is footwork totally necessary?

most of the best QBs ever on this game had nil to very little footwork (the two I built/helped build are #4 and #6 all-time for QBs in the HoF, and have 13 (for #4) and 27 (for #6) footwork). Saul Silver, who I consider the best QB I've ever faced, had 17 for footwork.

I mean, in theory you don't need any awareness or footwork if your offensive line is built specifically for pass blocking and isn't facing a defensive line built specifically for the same. In most cases you probably won't have that luxury and 35 footwork is such a trifling amount of points it's insane not to do it.

Also, if you call plays that are hard to get pressure on the QB, these attributes matter less as well.

Personally, I very rarely call plays that are easy to get pressure on, which is the biggest reason why my QBs rarely get sacked anymore
