It states that QB check down ability is increased as long as they are not being hurried. What is check down ability exactly and what does it do? Can someone tell me why this would be a useful attribute?

Basically he finds an open receiver faster.

From what I understand the QB has a first read, if they're not open he goes to the next read. The amount of time that takes is dependent upon your Pass Awareness skill and is sped up by that SA.

Fair bit of debate on the overall effect of Pass Awareness and Quick Read, partly because of the number of variables. Intuitively, quicker check-downs seem like a good idea, but it's hard to prove.

If you've played with the check down order on plays, you're aware that you typically are trying to set up one or maybe two of the routes for the defense you're likely to face. High Pass Awareness/Quick Read makes the QB process the check downs more quickly.

Whether that's good or bad depends on which receiver you're trying to emphasize and how long it takes that receiver to hit the route's sweet spot(or, if it's a quick hitter, exit the sweet spot).

You are, in effect, guessing at when the QB will check that route. It's an educated guess, based on watching the clock on replays, but still a guess. Very hard to figure in the early going when receiver speed is changing every two or three games. Also hard to figure when the sim changes, or the weather is bad, etc.

Quick Read gets checked more than once, so a moderately high Pass Aware will reliably trigger it at some point in the play. But do you want it to trigger immediately or later in the play? I don't know.

I think that's why a lot of QBs take On the Run first, because the effects of that one are more predictable.

The phrase check down in real football terms means throwing to the guy on the shortest underneath route....What if I don't want my QB to give up on his primary and deep routes faster? Will having "Quick Read" result in the QB throwing shorter passes?

If Quick Read just means he scans the field faster and identifies open receivers better then that would be a good thing but if it means that he results in throwing shorter passes all the time then that would be a negative in my opinion.

It doesn't check down to shorter routes. It just bends through the different targets faster to find the open man. That doesn't necessarily mean the QB is going to find the most open route though. It just means that the QB moves through the reads faster. One reason I am not much a fan of the SA is that I don't believe it puts you in the best possible position to throw the ball a lot of times.

Assuming you already have On the Run....What other abilities do you like for the QB position? Clock Manager? Pump Fake?

Both of those, hail mary, home town hero, road warrior. All decent options.

I'm a big fan of Quick Read. If you run 3WR/4WR/5WR sets, then it can really open things up for you. Also helps the QB find the receiver when they get daylight on a route. Many times you have a narrow window, like on a TE Post when the WR3 cuts on his post route. You want the QB to see him right when he gets separation, and not take long enough that the DB can recover and get a deflection/int. Helps on blitzing too.

That said, I usually stop at silver simply because the SA fires all the time.

I'm not sure if I like it. I generally know where I want to go with the ball and I don't want the check down to happen before my target gets where I know he will be open. In GLB1 I usually had the first 3-4 and sometimes all progressions aimed at the same target, this seems to be the opposite of what I want to do. Sucks when my main target is just busting free and I dump the ball to the HB behind the LoS hoping he will not catch it.

Same here. I always stop at silver.

I don't like QR myself... Usually after OTR, I like taking Quick Hitter or Clock Manager the like

I get it to gold simply because i make quick receivers and that already gets me more pucks because they don't really CiT (2 can and 2 can't) so it's good for spreading the ball and finding open receivers (even though he still throws it into traffic if he has the ball in his hand too long)
