Qb pass technique plays part
QB accuracy
Wr receiving hands
Wr receiving consistency
Wr receiving awareness
And possibly the wr conditioning, toughness, balance, vertical, and heart.
In my opinion all these things could be effecting whatever "wide open" plays you are speaking of.

You need awareness to turn around and see the ball. But if he already turned around then what they said.

You still need some awareness to turn and look at the ball. You know when the ball hits the WR in the side or back? It's because his awareness sucks.

Awareness is also how they locate an inaccurate pass by the QB. It's also what contributes to them identifying when to jump or dive for a pass to catch the ball.
