Does balance help a defender hold on to a HB when he is trying to tackle him? Trying to find skills other than tackling skills (grip/power/tech) that help tackle a HB.

it helps them stay upright, not only when tackling a HB but even when staying upright to tackle a receiver after the catch. Its always been extremely important for the DL but i think it's pretty undervalued on the defense mainly because of all the other skills that points need to go into

Plus it is cheap.

It also keeps them from going ape shit during a moral spiral...

I think balance is overrated actually. I have been putting less and less into it over the last 8 seasons or so and find it has limited effect - even on DL/OL. I don't think it effects tackling at all.

It has a major impact if you lose the blocking roll, but not before. If you have extremely high brb/prt on your dline then you aren't going to see much from balance. If you only have high brb you will see benefits from balance while pass rushing, if you only have high prt then you would see benefits during run plays..

at least that is how i've come to think of balance with the OL/DL

for the person who disliked my post, what was your purpose? Your ignorance baffles me, but I won't dwell on it.

Have you noticed that there is kind of a pushing/clashing between the OL & the DL? Balance is basically what allows your dot to stay up while in the motion. Then comes the blocking/rushing skills which determines either the time it takes for the lineman to be caked or cake the dot their matched up against.

Of course many people keep with the same builds and just undervalue other skills when their build is working, but when you've experimented with many types of builds you know differently. I won't go into it too much because the question was about defense and not linemen (which is why i said the person who disliked my post is ignorant because they clearly haven't experimented balance on DBs and LBs)

When being dragged, balance helps the defender stay upright longer. When tackling straight up, it determines how easy it is for a power HB to run them over. Just observations I've made over the last 19 seasons.

Ok but this thread is about balance used for tackling. Does it help "not get thrown off" the HB? Or does it help bring down the ball carrier?

This is what I am looking for. I am going to add balance to all my defenders and see if it helps missed tackles

Nope...just trying to make my guys tackle better.

Ty maybe right that balance helps in those situations, but the question you have to ask is it worth it for the points in your specific builds? I know that the longer I've played, the less I need it for my particular builds, except for WR's and screen WR's. Just a judgment call you're gonna have to make or test out in PUP.
