Went to send out contracts and we have a negative salary cap... I'm assuming this will fix itself once off-season hits?

Possibly but you may need to make some moves. Having too many superstars or players from a tier back can mess up a team's cap.

If it's the team of his I'm looking at, they don't have any earlier-tier S*'s (or any players for that matter), in which case it should get better.
OK, on the computer now. According to GLB2Scout you'll be fine once you roll over to Seasoned. Looks like about 287k in cap space will be available.
