Looking back at some of my games I've realized I was having trouble getting an even number of snaps for all of our CB's so I re-arranged my CB depth chart and it got me wondering.

How do all of you set up your CB depth charts for play balance? Do you allow everyone to be a backup or starter for all 5 CB slots, or do you force certain players to play at certain slots exclusively? Do you set backups for frequent, sometimes or infrequent?

All things equal I normally try:

a, b, c, d
b, c, d, a
c, d, a, b
d, a, b, c
frequently
And tweak as necessary from there since conditioning will be a big factor

I'm now at

ABCDE
EDCBA
CABED
DEBAC
BCEDA

frequently
I'm hoping it will work but since its rookie there are some large conditioning differences.

I don't put everyone in every slot.

Frequent vs sometimes, etc. depends on how many players I have fitting a certain archetype, how many of that archetype I want on the field at the same time, and the relative difference in build quality.

For instance, I generally only like 1 pure run CB. When he is on the depth chart, he is in a slot by himself set to infrequent.

I usually have 3 pure pass CBs, so they might share 2 slots with more frequent subbing.

This is more inline with how I do it. Then making match up depth charts based on what the other team likes to do (in this case who they like to get the ball to).
