I am starting a new team next season and i am planning on running a zone D. What attributes are most important early on in your guys opinions? Zone awareness seems pretty key. Then some combo of speed, quickness, footwork to get where you need to go once you figure out where that is. Other thoughts? Best SAs for LBs, DBs?O_o

IMHO, quickness and footwork are the top skills for CBs and LBs. Speed for safteies.

I would get HIGH zone awareness caps for all coverage LBs and CBs and Gold Eye of the Prize.

Coverage Tech and Deflection are important too.

Thanks, I figured you would make an appearance here. How high you think awarensess needs to be in the end>? 85? 100? 150

I would also create specialized builds and go extreme. Run stuffing CBs and LBs as well as pass coverage CBs and LBs. You need a S* SS too. He needs to play the run first then the pass...but make him fast so he can cover ground while in pass defense. I play mainly a cover 2 (nickel cover 2 vs 3WR) and cover 4 (3-2-5 vs 4WR).

*** I only call the Dime CB blitz because I have special blitzing CBs that I am building which you probably will not want to do. It is an experiment because I want to see how fast and how much pressure I can put on the QB. It takes up 2 roster spots and lot of salary though...they are pure speedsters.

Coverage CBs and LBs....very high zone awareness, between 85-100. You need EOTP and Zone Shark to fire on all passing plays. Only invest in power tackling for knocking the ball loose. Build big, tall DBs and LBs. Get cover tech fairly high....80s. Deflection should be around 55. You don't need a ton of deflection if your coverage guys are built correctly. Most deflections come from a player being in the right position, which is due to high footwork and quickness. Quickness and footwork need to be HIGH....like 80s. Speed maybe around 60? EOTP will give you +15 to speed, quick, int and verticle. Verticle and Int need to be around 30-40.

2 FS...one run stuffing and one coverage. Covearge needs to be very fast to play cover 2. Also high zone awareness, cover tech and decent deflection. Speed is way more important than footwork...quickness is important but speed is most important here. Footwork can be minimal.

Run stuffing LBs and CBs...you know how to build these I guess.

4 DEs...2 pass rush and 2 run stuffing.

3 DTs...pure run stuffers. You need them to stuff the middle run because your LBs will be mostly in zone coverage. Your pass rush will need to come from the DEs.

I can't see the builds either but you can watch the players and look at the combine numbers (lol) and draw some conclusions. If you want an effective defense, don't build a zone D. If you want to get the most out of a zone D, just pump sprinting + zone awr + pursuit. Deflecting helps too, but then down the line you'll want to pump power tackling + strip technique and you'll be in good shape.

That sounds good for stopping the run but horrible for stopping the pass.
