So never played this or the 1st one before, made a free player and signed a contract with a team. The team played a game but apparently I got no play time. Now I have no idea what to do. Do I have to buy something to keep playing? It just seems like I have no options to do anything.

No - you ended up on a team owned by an inactive guy.
GOOD NEWS though - the season is almost over (6 days) - and there will be a new season....you'll get to find a new team - make sure you find one with an active owner/coach

You'll have to retire and remake your player if you want on a rookie team though. Don't worry it will still be free. The Retire button is the one that looks like a sun setting on your player page

The current season is about to finish and move into an offseason period.
I'd recommend you "retire" your player this offseason, then rebuild him as a fresh rookie player. The team you signed with was probably one of your "automatic" contract offers. It's got an inactive owner, and as such isn't going to be reliably managed. You cannot retire him while on a team midseason, but since your owner is "inactive" you could try and re-sign him with a different team if you can find anyone that will sign him. That may be difficult with the offseason literally less than a week away at this point. You're best off just waiting until then and retiring/rebuilding the player for an active rookie team.
Take a look at the "teams looking for players" forum. Find a "rookie" team that's looking for players, and make a post to sign up to build a player for the team at a position they're advertising as a need.

It's better for you to contact one of the agents putting together these types of teams than to just accept an auto-contract from a CPU or Inactively managed team. You'll have a much better chance of enjoying your experience as a player agent.
As for what you can do, you build your player by spending skill points and Special Ability points that are earned throughout his career. You can also get into coordinating and team management by applying to become a coordinator for a team. Some people help manage multiple teams and are coordinators on multiple different staffs. That is all totally free to do, only being a team owner costs flex points.
