Lol bars (in my opinion) are impacted by (duh) the skills associated with that aspect of the game. Roster plays a huge role though - want to boost your D lolbar...simply add a DT or LB. Likewise with a passing defense - I expect an 8 CB team would have a really high passing lolbar.

So - given that lolbars are lol-ly - It did occur to me that I haven't often seen a high pass defense lolbar....why is that??

Team / passd+rund / passd / rund lolbars

Stunners: 175 / 73 / 102
Air Raid: 136 / 69 / 67
Harrisonburg: 145 / 71 / 74
Salty: 183 / 78 / 105 (might be 106 I can't tell)
MMA: 164 / 76 / 88
Stark: 163 / 73 / 90
Ronin: 156 / 70 / 86
Queen City: 159 / 71 / 88
Rhode Island: 139 / 65 / 74
DD 2.0: 167 / 73 / 94
Virgins: 151 / 72 / 79
Portland Storm: 154 / 70 / 84
Dookie Island: 148 / 66 / 82
Legacy: 162 / 71 / 91
Alaska: 161 / 79 / 82
Run GLB: 158 / 71 / 87

So - according to lolbars:

Top Defenses in the game based on pure builds/roster/lolbar:
Salty: 183
Minn: 175
DD2.0: 167
MMA: 164
Stark: 163
Legacy: 162
Alaska: 161
Queen City: 159
Run GLB: 158
Jebs: 158

Top Pass Defenses (same criteria):
Alaska: 79
Salty: 78
MMA: 76
Stark: 73
DD2.0: 73
Minn: 73
Virgins: 72

Top Run Defenses (same criteria):
Salty: 105
Minn: 102
DD2.0: 94
Legacy: 91
Stark: 90
MMA: 88
QC: 88
Jebs: 88
Run GLB: 87

So - my observations:
The run lolbars seem to be fairly accurate in terms of identifying good run defenses (teams who tackle and avoid pancakes).
The overall seems to be fairly accurate in terms of identifying good defenses.

But with passing (no - this is not a 'nerf passing' post):

The highest pass defense rating in top tier teams is Alaska at 79 (while Salty is at 105 for run). Lolbars are lolbars -- but Bort programmed the lolbars to represent those skills that are important for doing those things. Ultimately - it makes me wonder:

Is there some rudimentary build issue that all of the top teams have with pass defense - Are we missing something?

Are the lolbars equally valuing man and zone awareness resulting in inability to get pass D lolbars up in the 90+ range?

Also has to do with how many defensive players you have.

AA: 4.08
Hburg: 4.19
Salty: 4.3
MMA: 4.47
Ronin: 4.53
RIF: 4.54
QC: 4.65
Stark: 5.14
Legacy: 5.17
Virgins: 5.33
Dookie: 5.42
Air Raid: 5.79

Lowest yards per pass:
Virgins: 4.87

In some ways - these stats compared to lolbars could show the influence of the coordinators. Who overperforms -- who underperforms -- etc.

On pass defense you can put more defenders in coverage than you can against the run. In Pass, I can rush 3 giving me 8 defenders vs 4-5 Receivers and I'm not worried about any of those 8 defenders getting taken out by a Pancake. For rush defense you rarely have 1v1 against the RB(probably would lose anyway) due to their being a blocker matched up with every defender just based on where the defense lines up. I guess I said all that to say that most teams are putting more emphasis on run defense at the LB position forcing those lolbars in passing to remain much lower.

Maybe if we looked purely at ladder games. Tough to integrate league schedules. Like on the offensive side I know AA has a ton of scrap from CPU/inactives/cruds.

I don't know how to do that -- Scouter just shows "per game" in the central square spot. I don't know how to look at it for only ladders without going through game by game (too much work)

Stobie would have to do it for us. Maybe even just grab the best points for and points against vs the top 20 and somehow mesh in the lolbars.

A similar item would be determining top players by grabbing average stats vs the top 20. Obviously making it dynamic so that if a team drops out of the 20, the stats change to reflect the new top 20 teams.

Like HoF is all well and good with Jimbo and Super Gamble neck and neck, but I'd love to see a stat comparison vs top 20 teams. Not necessarily who has reamed the CPU teams harder.

dang - now I see how to do it - but don't want to go through it all for every team. sort by ladder - go to bottom - and the data will be there.

Stunners in ladder:
3.8 yards per carr
5.3 yards per pass
46% completion allowed

So yes - a boost up when looking only at ladder.

Run defenders also has a 103 in run defense.

Though we probably won't look comparable in actual stats till next season.
