anyway to know which AP points will be given back on respec? I don't want to pay for the respec if the whole reason i'm doing it is to remove 1 AP point and that is the one that doesn't go away

You get back all of the points spent during the players last tier, so if you have a Seasoned dot (for season 9) and have spent an AP(s) between Sophomore & Seasoned you will get that/them returned, if you spent your AP as a Rookie you will not get it back
