When the change was made for the QB not to throw the ball short of a first down on 3rd was made, it sounded like a great idea. I mean, no one in the game was getting any YAC anyway, so it made total sense not to have the QB intentionally throw anything less than a first down.
However, this also means that 3rd and long is a pipedream for most passing Os, as the other side knows that it can aggressively blitz with impunity, as the QB will hold on to the ball for the sack despite the number of open receivers. Great for Showboat and D stats, not so great for QBs and OCs (who are forced to run the ball in 3rd and long situations).
Maybe you can allow OCs to disable the down cap? Maybe the QB can have a tactic?
I just don't think that the new rattled mechanic balances well with the old hold the ball code. I mean, if I'm rattled from all those sacks, am I really going to hold the ball until I get hit again, or am I going to throw the ball to the open man before the 3rd down marker?
