When the change was made for the QB not to throw the ball short of a first down on 3rd was made, it sounded like a great idea. I mean, no one in the game was getting any YAC anyway, so it made total sense not to have the QB intentionally throw anything less than a first down.

However, this also means that 3rd and long is a pipedream for most passing Os, as the other side knows that it can aggressively blitz with impunity, as the QB will hold on to the ball for the sack despite the number of open receivers. Great for Showboat and D stats, not so great for QBs and OCs (who are forced to run the ball in 3rd and long situations).

Maybe you can allow OCs to disable the down cap? Maybe the QB can have a tactic?

I just don't think that the new rattled mechanic balances well with the old hold the ball code. I mean, if I'm rattled from all those sacks, am I really going to hold the ball until I get hit again, or am I going to throw the ball to the open man before the 3rd down marker?

I like it. Maybe even a drop down like scrambling and rolling out?

Only throw for 1st down yardage on 3rd downs:
- never
- sometimes
- always

(or whatever it is)

well there's always issues when going pure pass or run if you lack one thing you should have issues with being easy to read if you can't threat with a run why wouldn't people blitz you? same with run teams if they know you can hardly pass why shouldn't they use that against you?

Well, part of the problem is that a short pass isn't a threat. I watched a lot of football this weekend, and when teams would send the house to blitz on 3rd and long or at the end of the game and the other team was forced to pass, the answer was always to throw the ball short of the first down and count on YAC to get the yardage.

It isn't that there aren't RL answers to passing against the blitz, it is just that the sim currently forces the QB to hold the ball and take the sack when throwing the ball short or out of bounds is often the better play.

I have developed a decent outside rushing attack to complement the passing game and I have a 30% pass 70% run on 3rd and long against teams that have a scary blitz. My team has 4 S* WRs and a S* QB... why is it that my most obvious choice for third and long is to run the ball?

The real question is, should the sim hardcode the 3rd down passing, or should the OC or QB have an option to try something else?

Obviously, any short YAC attack solution needs to come with the degarbagification of short throws.

If only Pull Specialist didn't mean "Special" in the mentally challenged way.

Up the gut attempt on 3rd and 6, because a Showboat sack is too risky?
