surprised that is a fifth grade question. it doesn't call for anything more than arithmetic, but thinking through all the steps and translating the problem into numbers and procedures is usually harder for young people. I tutored some high school students that would not have gotten that, although that is more a testament of the poor education system in america than anything else

Here's the math for you non believer's.....

1 big cat + 7 small cats = 8 x 7 bags = 392 x7 bags= 2744 x4 legs = 10976 + 14 = 10990

i have seen this question have 2 different answers. the way you have it written Jay is right with 10990 but i have also seen it as 10992. 10992 would be if you count the bus driver if it was worded like this.

If a bus stops to get 7 girls.
Each girl has 7 backpacks.
In each backpack, there are 7 big cats.
For every big cat there are 7 little cats.

Question: How many legs are there in the bus?

Just a little difference in the question makes it a trick.
