My family had those until the mid 80's when I left for the military. There were five families on the party line we shared. And no you could not choose to get a private line because it was not offered. We also had three television channels and one was PBS.

Edit: And I remember going outside at night with a flashlight to spin the antenna so we could get a clear picture.

There are still radio phones that operate not far from where I live in Alaska that work similar to party lines.

Damn, I remember using pliers to turn the channel knob on the TV when the knob cover broke and/or fell off lol I remember the Party Lines when I was living in Detroit during the early 80's. Wow lol
