I've been watching replays of HB Counter Sweep Left trying to figure out WTF the pulling tackle's decision making process is.
On the times it works, the tackle blocks the outside LB after pulling. That's what I'd want to happen most of the time.
However, sometimes he pulls all the way outside ignoring the LB who then has a free shot at the HB, and instead goes after a safety who is well behind the LB at the point where it looks like the OT has no choice but to figure out who to go block.
What I think is happening on the good plays is that the OT is making a successful awareness check while pulling and hence, goes after the unblocked LB that he 'sees'. And on the bad plays, he fails that awareness check and finishes following his pull path before deciding who to block by which time the LB is farther away from the OT than the safety the OT goes after.
The problem is I have no idea which awareness the game is rolling against on this play, so not sure which would provide the more immediate benefit (long term, he'll get both, but short term??)
This brings me back to my question. Is there some way to know? Do all blockers who are moving before blocking use lead block? What about the wedge in special teams...lead or run?
It would help greatly if we had a well written guide of all the skills and exactly how the sim uses them.
