*Will update OP as we go

Passing is a game of separation and timing. Breaks in routes are specifically intended to gain a step or two of space on a defender in coverage. However, that space doesn't really do you any good if you don't take advantage of it.

I may be mistaken, but as it currently stands receivers are thrown to based on the progression, and a "score". If the score is high enough, the QB throws it.

My suggestion is this: Give receivers a score bonus as they near the break in their route.

This bonus would be dependent on what type of coverage, of course, but the closer you are to the break, the greater the bonus. I think this would lead to more QBs throwing passes AS receivers are hitting the break. This is something you see fairly often in reality.

What about increasing the bonus based on route technique as well? Higher route technique/quickness SHOULD give you a bit more separation initially.

Your suggestion is already in the game.

What you are saying about timing and what you are suggesting don't really match up to me.

Personally, timing is probably highest level of passing (throwing before the defender is open/the DB isn't looking or OOP). WR/DB interaction/QB reads and a few other minor things need to be solid before you go to the high level stuff like that.

What would happen if quick slants were timed correctly? Easy instant catch.
If the QB realized a WR at the hip of a CB with the CB's hips still not turned? Easy lob TD.

If we improve a large part of the already strong passing game while ignoring its counter and all the other small working parts its just going to create a larger problem.

A lot of this stuff already happens in the game already. The defenders are the ones not equipped to deal with it.

There is already a boost to the score of a receiver before he breaks on his route? Is the lack of "timing" then due to low QB awareness or something? I'd expect to see passes thrown before a receiver breaks, allowing him to catch it AS he's coming out of the break.

Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

First could be combated with defenders with high man awareness/quickness with the ability to break on the ball quickly and hit the receiver/bat the pass away (or some zones would put defenders in position).

The second doesn't really seem to be timing as much as it is just awareness to an out of position defender.

receivers don't need any freaking buffs.

these type of buff offense threads (especially QB->WR interaction) have no place until defense is fixed tbh

I made the man awareness thread, and then posted this one. I figured I'd throw out one for each side.

I understand how it is supposed to work IRL. My point is what you are suggesting is many steps ahead of the current game. I believe there are a few smaller steps in between thinking about incorporating timing routes and recognizing favorable matchups and out of position players. It's like a giant jump when it needs be broken down into very minute things to have confidence in knowing which variable is having which cause and effect.
