In the NFL:
-each team is allowed an 8 man practice squad
-a player on a practice squad can sign with any other team that makes him an offer - as long as he is put on their regular roster
-a practice squad player cannot sign to another practice squad unless he is released
-players can be eligible for 3 seasons on the practice squad
So - why have a practice squad?
-practice squad players get experience (so - want to build a QB even though you can't find a home? no problem)
-practice squad players are an opportunity to experiment with builds
-practice squad players are a source of recruiting for other teams (any can be poached)
-in GLB1 - farm teams abounded. In my experience..that kind of sucked. Teams that got very little attention (in terms of game planning) and were sort of second class citizens (often). But - if you want to get with a good team - and you were behind in terms of experience - you had to join a farm team. That was the option. This way, 8 players (or more) could actually be groomed / part of the forum / watched / etc. It could be that in GLB2 - it isn't a big problem (if the build is good) to have a sophomore on a junior or senior team. We don't know yet - but this would prove that out.
-practice squad players would accrue chemistry with the main team - so mid season - you have a guy go inactive on you (or quit GLB) -plug in a practice squad player and there is no chemistry hit.
-practice squad players can be signed anytime (even in the playoffs)
How will practice squad players get 'game experience' (ie game film from which they can see how they are doing / and scouts can watch them play and make them an offer)?
-practice squad players will have inter-league games just like league games (probably a different day though). The tactics and playbook will work like a CPU team. The game themselves will essentially be a semi-organized pick up game...with an attempt to keep practice squad players from team A on the same pick up team.
Maybe this is a stupid idea - but I do think that I would use it a lot (at the very least with my very own guys). I think it might bridge the gap some between high level and lower level players. I think it might be a negative factor for farm teams (which I think is good). And - more players ultimately means more revenue for GLB which ultimately means a more successful and better GLB.
There are plenty of other ways you could go (all require programming and I understand that is a problem) - but perhaps there is a button for scrimms that says "add practice squad players to the DC" and that way they could get a chance to be gauged vs the main team... there are others but this is too long already - use your imagination - you can probably come up with 10 reasons why this is stupid - and 10 reasons why it would be neat.
