Do you have to play in games to get the experience?
My owner dropped one of my guys right before the playoff game, making him stuck at 93.3 instead of 96.7 like the rest of my players.

Yes you do. Corndog said they're working on some sort of remedy for people suffering this sort of situation. You'll probably get a "catch up" option this offseason.
