Maybe just add weather effects, and then give everyone a "retractable roof" - and the owner can set the roof open or closed for each game based on a weather report (which may or may not be 100% accurate, up for discussion). No need to be realistic about the report, set a weather report for the whole season from the get go.

Weather Effects could be tested out by creating Weather tournaments - either tournaments with Random weather turned on, or specific weather tournaments. The Snow Tournament, the Rain Tournament, the Hot and Humid tournament, etc.

Can we live in make-believe and have "high altitude" be a "weather" that could happen? AAAAAAAAHH THE ATMOSPHERE

Sorry - gotta be honest. This doesn't really sound like fun to me.

it sounds like a lot of programming time (what are the boosts / penalties of grass vs turf -- how about snow? rain? drizzle? cold? heat? etc) - plus the weather forecast - plus the stadium roof control - then people will want the weather to show in the sim.

Now what happens? Well coordinators (o and d) now have to come up with snow tactics / rain tactics / heat tactics / cold tactics / etc.

So - lots of work from game programmers (which at the moment could be better spent in other areas)
- lots more work for OC/DCs
- 2 minutes (or less) work for owners to quickly research the other teams home stadium conditions and click a button (roof open / roof closed)

for me - it honestly adds nothing for owners - and would suck programming resources away from the sim / the site AI / adding plays / etc / etc.

Sorry to be THAT GUY.

Being able to set the roof open or closed sounds silly. I would actually just leave the retractable roof out of the equation all together thinking about it. Either outside or inside.

The boosts and penalties are what makes it fun. And I have always wanted to see weather in the game.

Well then just remove the stadium altogether and just make games have weather. Or maybe just tournament games have weather - not sure I want weather funkiness changing playoff results.

I do agree with txsteve that adding complexity to the game isn't really required yet - let's get more defensive plays and play teams up until Vet level at least and see how it goes.

To be fair, funkiness due to weather affects collegiate bowl games and NFL playoff games

I like the weather ideas, but not really caring for stadium roofs and whatnot.

Weather and how it affects fumbles etc, would be AMAZING.

"I'm now reporting from what I'm being told is a Canadian winter playoff football game, but until the zamboni gets off the field, and the players take to the ice, I just won't know."

cost of an outdoor stadium way less than an indoor , and way way less than a retractable roof.....
bad weather in an open stadium affects the visiting team more if they come from a closed environment.
seating costs more to build in a high end stadium....cheap cheap in a open......have players contract money play a role in their lives.....buy expensive house....bling....recreation....girlfriend on the side....uh no... and it affects the moral of the player.
pays for personal trainer or facility....affects conditioning.
whaaa? ....oh...too much?....ok nevermind.

IF you really want realism , you can do weather with some GIS skills and basically get it down to only 4 "pre-game" data calls.

Take a GIS layer of cities from any of the universities, or simply ask any competent GIS analyst they usually maintain one of their own. Run an intersect with the UN's Global Climate Data Layer (Also free) ; then generate values of:

Minimum , Maximum, and Average in three different categories:

Temperature
Precipitation
Wind Speed

Assign August Results to days 1-10
Assign September Results to days 11-20
Assign October results to days 21-30
Assign November results to days 31-40
Assign December results to days 40+

That will give you an approximation of real weather.

You'd have to let the owners pick "nearest city" from a drop down list, if you want to narrow the list set it to 50,000 population. Then it simply makes a few data calls assigning a weighted distribution out from the average based on the city and day just before the sim.
