Ha, I brought this up to Bort in our meeting yesterday. My kicker did the same thing, but kicked the ball from the 4 yard line, and missed!

Evidently this happens so rarely that someone misses from so close that the rule never comes up. But in college/nfl/every real football rule if you kick the ball into the endzone, and it isn't returned out it is a touch back.
Sounds weird, but if you think about it, it makes a little sense.

Err, side note, as you can remember from the recent Albama/Auburn game if you choose to return the kick, and get tackled at the 10 yard line you get the ball there, and not where the kick was from. So that is why you only see field goal kicks attempted to be returned with no time left on the clock.

If it was a touchback then if an NFL kicker misses a 52yd FG then the opposing team would have to start from the 20, not the 35. Also their is no penalty so the opposing team would not get to choose where the ball is placed. As for the return it is because the ball is in play until it go out of bounds, just like some body running up the sideline or diving for the pylon if the ball goes out of bounds or the player goes out of bounds with the ball the play is dead.

And those are what Bort had decided to go with. Kind of archaic I agree but they make sense.

You are complaining about actual rules?

I wouldn't describe it is complaining, since these rules are never really applied to the game we watch on tv. It is a very valid point which I tried to express in my first response since I thought the same thing.

Hmm, interesting. I would like to see a Kicker miss from that close in an NFL game and see if the refs know this. Well, I guess I stand corrected and thank you for sharing that with me. I love learning stuff like this

Being an Oregon Ducks fan, 2 years ago I learned a new rule I never knew of. In college on an extra point the defense is allowed to return it for 2 point conversion. That isn't that weird, but what is weird is on a block PAT the ball crosses over the line of scrimmage and the defense recovered it at the one yard line. They than tried to return it, but were tackled in the end zone.
The result a safety, as one would expect. The surprise, it was a one point safety! Check it out if you don't believe me.

That's crazy! Even if they would've gotten out of the end zone the forward lateral would've screwed them. But wow. Craziest way to score a point that I've ever heard of.
