When I created my first player, I added 5 pts into attributes.

Now I can add to skills and abilities but I don't see anywhere I can add to attributes -are the attributes locked in at those values for the entirety of their career?

Yes. Those first attributes on the traits create player screen make up your max caps for attributes. You can also subtract points on each of those skills to get more to add other places. Caution on going down to 1 on any of those skills though as that will severely hurt your cap in any attribute based on that skill.
