Dots do not represent the actual position of where the player is on the field. Technically the LB is 10 yards away when the dot looks like hes at the QB.

it helps also, when not in passing situations, to go:
cover man w/out move: HB / blitz
instead of just straight up blitz
and your LBs will be paying more attention to the HB, even as he's starting his blitz.
he may not get off the line as quick, but he will be better able to adjust to the HB than a straight up blitz.
and even on passing situation, we often use and get sacks with these "check down" blitzes.

This. Blitzers must pass a vision check to read a run while they are blitzing.
They had to do it this way so that you couldn't blitz all of your LB's every down and reach the QB or get a TFL on a HB.
Once you bring up your vision it won't happen that often, but I've seen it in Pro's as well.
