well that is where the cheerleaders are......

In response to several comments about when the overpursuit started, here's my recollection:

There were at least 3 seasons (maybe more??) where the low-level passing was buffed, but screens still didn't work. In that time period, passing coverage was pretty reasonable for pee-wee dots. also, in those days, you could cover the roll-out with your passing defense (coverage settings were something like man1, man2, man3, then blitz...no route meant blitz and would slaughter the roll-out). That's around the time where the McColumns and RK "double coverage" defenses became god-like...you could crush the outside rush, roll-out, and WR pass with out making a single change. Since there was only one play where the RB and FB went for passes on the same side, you could basically double team all but one potential receiver. Then Bort changed it so there's a pass/run vision check in the first tick of the play, and a roll-out gets read as a pass...thus CBs on the outside don't know they need to tackle the QB, even though he's running right at them: hence we're stuck tagging QBs for every game. I started noticing overpursuit right around this time, although I wasn't playing competitively at the time so didn't care. Around this time period, there were several adjustments to tackling (and I think vision, but the changelog didn't specify vision). When I came back and started with BNI/Shink/RK, screens had just been fixed, and overpursuit fluctuated a bit over that first season (uhh...S19 or S20 I think??). My second season with BNI was with the new DPC, the nerfed run and buffed D-line (and more "tackling" adjustments), and since then overpursuit has continuously been a major problem, although I agree that how badly each position overpursues has varied over time.

To me it's almost like a Y2K type of programming bug. Like the chase-down/intercept code makes an assumption about how many points a defender has in some stat...and at our level we're just getting whacky math that wasn't intended. Maybe not as as bad as the dreaded Y2K "divide by zero" problem, but maybe something like dividing by 0.1 in pee-wee where they figured it would be more like 10-20 in higher levels (i.e. the division with our small value makes the result bigger where they were assuming it would get smaller...where the "result" is a swing variable that changes your direction or something...so we end up overpursuing).
