The Blica Bulletin - Issue 5 - "Bee's victory is sweet for ROTTEN"
Written By Herouk87
St Michael - Today was a record setting day for the Bath killer Bees and certainly one to forget for the St Michael Blica as turnovers were the deciding factor in this week 5 matchup. After last week’s tight loss to FF-FD at Mile High Blica, St Michael travelled to the hive to face the 3-1 Bees, lead by their CB tandem of John Holloway and Danko Swanko, who emerged to be the real difference makers in the match.
The game got underway with St Michael having the first possession and wasting no time in setting up their now synonymous passing game. Lead by the ever present Eric MartinsQB, the Blica's first drive of the game finished in the first points of the game. MartinsQB completed 5 of 6 passes before hitting The Wideout, who was given too much room by Swanko; for his 2nd TD of the season. This sent the travelling Blica fans, or Blica-heads as they are now known (an homage to the cheese heads so we at the Bulletin are lead to believe) wild in the stands. However in truth, this was their high point of the afternoon as things went downhill from there for St Michael.
The Bees seemed intent on running the ball as oppose to St Michaels passing approach, Speedy Mcgee leading the way in the first quarter, but after one unsuccessful drive apiece Bath shifted to the pass game behind Guns McCoy. It was McCoy who gave up the first turnover of the game when under pressure from Kriss DontKROSShim, his pass which deflected off McGee was picked off by Achilles Veron to give the Blicas great field position. Whilst the Blica defense were still celebrating the interception, on the very next play Martins returned the favour to Bath by throwing the ball behind his receiver. This time it was Swanko getting the better of Wideout for the INT.
St Michael’s next drive also ended in a Swanko INT, his second of the game which gave the ball to Bath well within FG range. It was to be Bath who finished the drive the stronger team with FB Zob Smith stretching pass Clive Picot on the goal line. A very exciting quarter ended in a highly contested 7-7 tie.
After an exciting beginning to the game, the game experienced a frankly disappointing 2nd quarter which despite St Michael having the better part of possession, neither side could mount a sustained attack. Even with MartinsQB's third interception of the day, this time by Fat Boy Bumping just after the two minute warning, the score at halftime remained 7 a piece.
Everyone witnessing the match today knew that there would be more points scored and sure enough they would not be disappointed. The third quarter saw St Michael come out and play as they had in the first quarter. It was MartinsQB once trying to make amends for his earlier mistakes by completing 9 passes in a row to lead the Blicas into FG territory. They then took the lead with a 34 yarder by Gazoo Gramatica and hoped their normally solid defense would hold firm. However this was not to be the case as on the very next drive it was the Bees who tied the game up again with 35 yard strike from Odd Skulll. Both teams seemed to be feeling each other out before launching a final attack in the fourth quarter.
St Michaels next drive was interrupted by the freak play of the season a MartinsQB pass was intercepted at the line of scrimmage by Simon Hallissey who then fumbled the ball. The ball was scooped up by Bary Sanders, MartinsQB's original target, which meant a fresh set of downs for the Blicas.
The drive ended in a chip shot for gramatica but once again the Bees came back strong and levelled the scores for the third time in the game at 13-13. The pressure was mounting in the Hive.
In what would later be hailed as a titanic mistake, St Michaels next drive saw backup QB Brian McKinley take the helm from MartinsQB who did struggle all game, the question being asked around the stands was whether or not McKinley could lead St Michael to victory. The answer to this was an emphatic no. McKinley took to the field in great position after a Brock Leetman was recovered by Bill Brickwall. His first play of the drive would be the one that eventually lost the game for the Blicas. A pass which should have been caught by Scott Madison bounced into the arms of star LB JOHNNY ROTTEN who outrun the offense for Bath's first lead of the match at 20-13. Mckinley and St Michael's last chance died when a long ball went through the fingertips of Bobby Blackk and into the waiting arms of Jon Holloway, thus sealing the Bath victory and sending St Michael to their third straight defeat and a potential quarterback controversy.
The player of the game award must belong to JOHNNY ROTTEN as it was his INT that won the game for his side. It must also be said that a defensive member from either team should get an honourable mention as there were 9 turnovers in the match. St Michaels next match up is against the Wales Whales, who were undefeated until a loss this week to a strong Stirling side. If St Michael are to have any chance of victory then they need to solve their turnover problem as 17 giveaways and a +- of -10 is not good enough to compete in this division. As far as change is concerned...watch this space
