THE BLICA BULLETIN - Issue 4 "Heartache for Blica's as Satellite come out on Top"

Written by herouk87

St Michael - The pain and anguish were plain to see today on the faces of the Blicas as they exited the field, unfortunate losers of a game which they feel that they may have won on another occasion. St Michael went into the matchup with hopes of continuing their impressive run of 126 minutes without conceding a touchdown, and more importantly aimed to level their record at 2-2 at this early part of the season. FF-FD were also in desperate need of a win following last week's dismantling at the hands of the Stirling Crusaders and were also trying to hit 500. A close matchup was in the stars for this one and it didn't disappoint.

As expected the game started with both defenses having the upper hand. Both defenses had scouted all week the main plan's of attack for either side with the Blica's stopping Christian Stubber early whilst the Satellite defense stifled the pass heavy Blica offense. With neither team being able to make it far into the opposing half, it was an early sign that turnovers would decide today's outcome. No sooner had the thought of turnovers left this reporters pen when BOOM, a devastating hit from The L Defensive End on punt returner AJ Davis sent the ball tumbling to the early. Luckily for the Satellite, it was Jones McPride who exited the pile up with the ball and saving FF-FD from an early setback.

This fumble recovery seemed to spur on the Satellite faithful and sure enough the FF-FD offense began to march downfield. An extremely patient drive culminated in the first points of the game, an inch perfect kick by Alfredo LeBoot from 48 yards. Now it was the turn of St Michael to retaliate quickly as they seem to have done so often this season.

St Michael finished the first quarter in a positive manner, within the Satellites half and moving the ball well thanks to Eric MartinsQB. However on the first play of the second period, the ball was fumbled by Eric Martins on 3rd & inches after a big hit from Dan Andersen, his main contribution of the afternoon. Luckily the ball was recovered past the first down marker by George N Window. This lucky escape was all the impetus that St Michael needed. Just two plays later it was MartinsQB who hit TE James Braddock for the Blica's longest play of the season and a lead in the match. Braddock; playing from the slot, managed to burn Larry Fatslegs and outrun the Satellite defense for his first touchdown of the year, a great moment for the young TE.

St Michael then looked to increase the gap straight away. With the normally reliable Mark "xXx" Andersen being picked off by recent signing Bullfighton Acid, St Michael got the ball in great field position and full momentum. Sure enough St Michael hit pay dirt for a second time in the quarter and once again it was MartinsQB hitting Braddock in stride for their second 6 pointer of the afternoon, this time breaking the tackle of Cork Shannon. A big hats off goes to the Blica scouting staff in finding a way through this tough FF-FD defense.

With the fans inside Mile High Blica in full voice, St Michael looked to kill the game off before the half after FF-FD once again had to punt the ball away.

The final six minutes of the half finished in a complete fracas, with possession changing no less than 6 times, 2 as a result of turnovers. It was a testament to FF-FD as they managed to pick off MartinsQB twice as well as force another fumble from RB Eric Martins. They also managed to tack on another 3 points in the mayhem, and as halftime approached it was very apparent that both sets of coaches wanted to see their players in the locker room to regroup. TAhe score at the half, a very exciting 14-6 in favour of the home team Blicas. Everyone in the stadium was hoping this excitement would continue in the second half.

The team talks seemed to have their desired effect as both teams looked to be jacked up for the second half, in particular the Satellite offense looked lively on the sidelines. After instantly holding the Blica offense to a three and out, FF-FD went straight to work. The running back tandem of Earthwind Andfire and Christian Stubber moved the chains downfield before Stubber flew into the endzone to make the score 14-12. Despite a missed PAT by Leboot, FF-FD were back in this game, and back in a big way.

If the first half was a game for the defenses, then the second half was most definitely one for the offenses. After the Stubber TD, both teams strung together double digit play drives which ended in FG's by Gazoo Gramatica and Leboot respectively. Both defenses were visibly struggling to contain the rampant offenses as the game entered the 4th quarter, where both teams knew that one mistake could lose them the game. The tension was immense in Mile High Blica.

The game came down to one drive. With 13 minutes left on the clock, FF-FD mounted a huge 8 minute drive which finally ended after Leboot converted another three pointer, just one play after Christian Stubber fumbled the ball only for his Qb to fall on it. With the game at 18-17, this fumble seemed to knock the wind out of the Blica sails, unable to recover from this drive, the succumbed to their third loss of the year as Stubber ran out the clock.

This disappointing loss hurts the Blica's who will need their running game to fir on all cylinders when they play the 3-1 Bath Killer Bees, who destroyed St Michael 45-3 last season and will be looking for another similar performance.
