Why power rankings are worthless. Charlie Don't Surf beat Tripoli Leathernecks, and are ranked behind them.

...So many people misunderstand rankings. Rankings are expressions of how good teams are, not who beat who. As for teams ranked behind teams they beat, the question should be "Could this team win 6 or 7 out of 10 against the other team?"

College football fans are generally more aware of this fact than pro fans. I'm not saying that these rankings (or the BCS, for that matter) are infallible. That's why they play the games...

...So many people misunderstand English. English is a language that is used to express ideas. The idea that apparenly is too oblique in the previous post will be simplified here. Power rankings are useless....

Power rankings will probably become a bit more of a fair reflection after 4 or 5 games. But if the formula is good then they tend to be fairly accurate.

Of course, the old saying "on any given sunday" still applies and Stanford will beat USC every now and then. However, generally they indicate the strength of teams (not whether they will beat everyone below them)
