But it looks like he never really went for it... that's where I think confidence comes in. Or maybe the sim is just deceiving me... nothing new

I don't really know if i believe in the "makes the player think he can do something" confidence thing, especially after reading the bort/catch22 Q&A thing. I know it plays a roll in morale and also in forcing fumbles and causing/resisting SAs like snarl/growl/aura/etc... Probably also is a minor feature in a few other rolls but i'm not sure i agree with your assumption
