Maybe in the rest of GLB. In Pee Wee with 45 players, with no Stamina to speak off, guys would be dragging there knuckles on the ground come the 3rd and 4th quarters.

But both teams would be, so I don't see the big deal.

Limits our creative juices having fewer players.

Or perhaps it does just the opposite. Clearly, there would be more strategy in depth charts, energy, formations, and player use.

More players = more strategy. Fewer players = fewer possible strategies. With 55 player rosters you will see far fewer teams using the exact same configurations. With 45, you will see a lot of teams copying pretty much the same systems.

1QB
2HB
3HB
4FB
5TE
6C
7C
8G
9G
10G
11T
12T
13T
14WR
15WR
16WR
17WR
18K
19P

20DE
21DE
22DE
23DT
24DT
25DT
26LB
27LB
28LB
29LB
30LB
31CB
32CB
33CB
34CB
35FS
36FS
37SS
38SS

Pretty much mandatory positions.

39TE
40DE
41DT
42LB
43FB
44QB
45T, G, or C

Pretty much the obvious extra backups?

Oops. Now we are out of positions to use. There won't really be much difference between rosters when you don't have that many choices.

Is it very different now? Add a 5th wr, a 5th cb, a 3rd HB, along with a 4th OG & OT. That gives you 49. After that is it really all that much strategy if your ST's are C's, DE's, or SS's? Or if you want a 3rd QB or TE?

Yes. Next season I'm not even running a special teams unit. I am just going to have a shitload of specialists to give my team the edge. Say you are playing a team where they miss a lot of tackles on the outside? Bam. Drop in the power HB to catch screens or plug in your strength and carrying WR or TE. The ability to have specialists is going to be the difference next season.

I run two QBs, four HBs, two TEs, and two FBs this season. Next season I might have three FBs. Three. Blocking and agility on one FB to help keep the pass rush off me or to distract opposition into thinking that I am passing because my pass blocker is in. Speed and Agility to block for speed on outside routes. Speed and Strength to block for those bruisers. Why limit my creativity by limiting my roster size any more than it is?

the problem is getting all the players in to achieve max exp.

That's not going to happen in Gold anyway. You don't have the blowout games to get max exp and you boost early or you don't make playoffs. If you want to make the decision to get max exp and run a smaller team, that is your call, but then you need to worry about stamina.

If you want to run a 55 player team, that is one of the trade-offs.

Not true. NOPW didn't boost until the last 2 or 3 games of the year (depending on XP gained).
