I can't figure out if my LOT was being smart or dumb. At first it looked smart, but based on the results, it seems pretty dumb. It has probably happened before, this was just my first time seeing it on a pbp.

At least ineligible receiver penalties aren't implemented in GLB, though Bort did try to get rid of it on screens and will probably fix this if it starts happening regularly.

Unless this has been seen elsewhere before this season, I would assume that Bort was tweaking how linemen pick up defenders to prevent some O-line assignment/blitzing exploits possible with the DPC and that he inadvertently broke the restriction that pass blocking linemen should maintain a pocket instead of (illegally) going down field to block. It might only be situational.

Does the LOT have a high vision build? It looks like he is passing a spot blitz check very early on and trying to attack it ASAP. If Bort was trying to let the O-line be more re-active to outside blitzes to combat some of the exploits, I could see this being an unintended consequence.

He just reached vision in his build plan, so it is only at 50 atm. Maybe it is a consequence of low vision? it just doesn't make sense.

Changelog update:

Dec 8, 2009
- Make sure overlap protection code doesn't push D linemen too far outside the box
- Roll back some changes to pass block selection due to some other issues that have come up
- Make sure no time runs off the clock on an encroachment penalty

edit - I wonder what those problems were?
