Eric Dickerson is in the conversation as well.

Dickerson was Adrian Peterson before Adrian Peterson.

People have mentioned Jackson, and while he may be the best athlete to ever put on a football uniform he was a part timer with a short career. He's not in the conversation.

This is true. He was unstoppable. Playing with the Raiders was considered cheating.

WTH!!!!! not even a mention of Walter Payton....

1.Walter Payton
2. Barry Sanders

Both of these were backs put up numbers regardless of what was around them.

Emmitt shouldn't even be in the same sentence he is a hall of famer purely b/c he was lucky enough to be on Dallas but you put Emmitt on another team say the Buffalo Bills and I believe he wouldn't have done as well as Thurman Thomas did there.

I agree that Payton has to be in the conversation. Both of those backs have to be in the conversation, but it does not end with just them.

This is insane. Emmitt did a lot of little things that were not noticed by the casual fans, but those things won games. He was never tackled on his back. He always gained yards by being tackled. There was not a better running back in regards to pass protection. He had great hands, phenomenal feet, and his knees were always pumping. That made him hard to tackle. Payton and Roger Craig were the only running backs that kept their knees up as well as Emmitt. Backs like that force you to hit them high, and they get their pads lower because of it.

Adrian Peterson, ldo

but really, Barry Sanders was the best I ever saw, and he always had a horrible line to run behind. If you put him behind the Dallas OL of those days, he would probably hold every rushing record today.

I don't think he would. I doubt he would have done any better than Emmitt. Barry was extremely talented, but he made the line look worse than it was. Detroit had talent on the line. However, they were always accused of having a bad line. Why is that? A lineman can only open a hole for a brief period. They opened the holes, but Sanders preferred to run to daylight as opposed to running off the hip of his blocker. Therefore, any play that was designed to open a small crease would not work for him. He would either pass it by in favor of a larger hole that never developed, or he would decide to hit it too late.

Personally, I feel it was his vision that held him back. Emmitt had much better vision.

That's an interesting take. I"m not sure about the style of running... I mean, Barry always danced around looking for a home run and got quite a few negative rushes every game.

I never saw him play at Ok St... was he that type of runner there too?

I only skimmed through this thread, but is there any reason why I haven't seen Thurman Thomas in this discussion?

One of the best backs to ever play for the Dolphins, imo.

I can understand why some would put him in the discussion, but I just don't think he was at the level of some of the others. I totally dig his style of running, though.

Wait, what?

Sucks to be a Colts fan and a smash mouth football fan at the same time. At least they're good, but god damn, learn how to run the ball!

Its hard to run the ball when Peyton is hand picking his OL for pass protection. They are not very good run blockers at all.

I am a little more concerned about facing the Titans this week than facing the Colts next week. I think we will give Indy it's first loss. The Titans are on a roll, and all the VY dumbasses will be out in full force Monday night. I really hope VY and Cushing meet up at some point. I hope Demeco and Pollard get a shot on him, too.

There's never any real favorite in those games. The two teams have played each other so often in the last few years, they know exactly what the other team is going to do. Always an interesting game.
