LEFKADA (AP): Glowing blue skies, glowing blue girls and, rather unusually, glowing opponents marked the start of the football season in beautiful Lefkada as the Chernobyl Aftermath swapped nuclear winter for glorious summer. Lekada's Hawks Nest stadium, a mixture of breathtaking soaring columns, dodgy kebab stalls and rancid toilets recalled the glory of a lost civilisation and was one-tenth-filled to the rafters as the entire 6,900 population of the town barely made in an impression on the vast, 80,000 seat EU-sponsored venue. Luckily for the half dozen islanders who were unable to make it to the game, the team declared the usual sell out to lift the local TV blackout, with the remaining 73,000 tickets snapped up by an unknown admirer with a Brussels-registered Visa card.
The Sea Hawks were quickly on the board, largely thanks to the genius of their Head Coach, taking the opening kickoff and driving down the field and finishing with Henry Brighton's four yard TD run. Chernobyl were struggling to adapt to the conditions, with several players puzzled by the strange green covering on the ground, although they did hit back with a field goal. However, on the home team's next drive a 69 yard TD pass to Robbie Earnshaw put the Hawks further in front, with another masterful playcall doing the damage.
The game remained close as the teams traded scores, but another Hawks TD put them out 28-10 as half time approached. Chernobyl desperately needed to drive down and get a TD before half time to get themselves back in the game and they looked to do just that, taking the ball from their own 20 down inside the Lefkada 10 yard line before tragedy struck. The referees sounded the two minute warning, prompting understandable panic from the visitors who immediately fled the stadium and hid in the surrounding hills. When they were coaxed back down, their concentration was clearly in tatters and they turned the ball over on downs, ending their last real chance to get back into the game.
By the end of the game Lefkada QB Seahawks Rock! had passed for 335 yards and 4TDs but was happy to spread the praise around, saying 'I would be nothing without our great and wonderful Head Coach, to whom all credit must be given for my performance!'. WR Robbie Earnshaw also had a good game with 158 yards receiving, giving Chernobyl CB Dolemite "Four Eyes" Jenkins real problems all day long. 'He just didn't know where to look for me' boasted Earnshaw.
Despite the big win, Lefkada owner Downhill PV remained philosophical. 'Just because we won does not mean that we were victorious' he commented, before he headed off to pay his credit card bill.
Next week Lefkada travel to Rome, whilst the Chernobyl team will be taking a trip to the salt mines in Siberia.
