since some of our guys are getting close to the 10 season mark:

how did you do on your first build? do you still have him or did you have to retire him?

after playing for several seasons, i realized my mistakes and my successes. my first guy, radja, was ok after i hit the 30's, but i gave far too much attention to being successful in the first A league.

i fixed most of my mistakes, but really wish i hadn't put any points in SA early.

I had the "luxury" of having my first three guys either on bad teams or playing backup roles, and by Season 4, I had "rescued" their builds. Now, two were OL but 1 was a LB and he's been a stud since Season 6.

I think any build can be "rescued" if the agent is willing to work with it over time. Sometimes that means a LOT of time.

It's usually not too hard to rescue a build if you have lots of $ for equipment. I would have done things a little different'ly with some of my earlier guys but nothing drastic. More regarding the order in which I cap stuff versus the abilities/SA I put them in to.

I'm really looking forward to how the players who were built season 5 and beyond will look in their 10th season. Since the way we train and the options the players have are different since season 1-3. The things I learned are I'll never boost before level 24 again. It doesn't speed anything up and it's just a waste of money and FP. As for builds I bought into the whole slowbuild/hit your cap crap and looking back I think that was a mistake. I really didn't get alot of opportunities for my guys to start in their early years so it's hard to decide what worked and what didn't early in their builds. For me it's more just fundamentals of how I play the game.

My Ol players are still doing well, I am sure with a few fixes they would be even better.

i kinda like the slow build programme but i don't rely on it. i'm involved with an 'erratic' programme where we intend on making the players competitive as soon as possible, which includes adding 5 of the first 15 SP put into stamina and at every level up until 30 1 SP was spent on stamina.

the rest of the SP were equally distributed bewteen the primary skills whilst the secondary skills were trained. i use this erratic method to complement the slow build for better balance.

personally, as long as you have depth at those positions, I go with the thinking that you NEVER add SPs into stamina. Only train it. Its really a waste because as long as you have 1 or 2 other solid builds at your position, you aren't going to need 50+ stamina. So you can train it on intense with speed/agility/confidence/jumping and be perfectly fine using your SPs on primary attributes

One thing I've realized: You sorta have to have a date when you want your player to be ready to play. For example, if you're in a level 13 cap league, it's really hard to have a starter while still soft-capping his abilities---especially at positions that have more varied important qualities like LB, WR or Safety. Yeah, your guys will be running with 50 speed but if his vision is only 18 where's he running to?

On the other hand, if you do everything right and build out his core to soft-caps, you can reasonably start the players in his 20s but 2nd tier abilities like Stamina, Confidence, etc will still be low, impacting his performance...

Then, if you have the patience for it, there's the third target, players in their low 40s and up. By then your chosen path is sorta dictated. If you wasted SP "rounding out" a player while in his teens, the upper-echelon #s are really going to suffer here. These are those guys with 100s in their core abilities while still not having an obvious flaw like 38 stamina.

The hardest part is balance: Getting the player his reps while (A.) not being a liablity to the team and (B.) having the patience to build him out correctly for that higher level role...
