I remember a few seasons ago the consensus was that the Protect SA was broken and everyone suggested not wasting SPs on it. Is this still the same, or is it a worthy investment?

It's by far the best OT SA.

anyone else have an opinion, specifically about whether its still broken or not?

Broken in a good way, very overpowered. Every LT should go out and find at least 1 piece of AEQ with Protect.
