The day the voice of baseball in Philadelphia died. Harry Kalas the amazing voice of the Phillies since 1971 has died today in Washington D.C.. He passed out in the annoucers booth prior to the Phillies/Nationals game today.
Many of you may have no idea who Harry was, but many of us do not know baseball in Philadephia without the voice of Harry Kalas. Harry the K was also famous for football, he has done among other things NFL radio broadcasts for westwood one, voice overs for NFL films , and Inside the NFL. Harry had a golden voice, and could paint pictures with words, the like of which we are unlikely to see again. Harry and his kind of annoucer are a dying breed, the guys who put the game above all else.

I am happy that Harry got to call the World Series for the Phils in 2008, now he can finally be re-united with Richie Ashburn and call games in heaven.

RIP Harry you will be missed.

Yes, this is VERY unfortunate, ESPECIALLY when in game broadcasters have been around since most of us were little. As a child, progressing through the years, growing more and more as a fan...the announcers become JUST AS IMPORTANT as the players themselves. Same w/ staff around the venues; Gate Attendants, Security, Venders, etc...the Phils will NEVER be the same w/o him. I can remember the FIRST time I heard him. It just so happen to be a game for their AAA Team (Wilkes-Barre Scranton Red Barons), he'd made a surprise visit the final year before the Yankees took over the Field...Was never much of a Philly fan, but I went to school in that area, and as a fan of baseball, you go not to root for the players, but enjoy the sport of the game...And broadcasters made it that much more enthralling.

I remember him best for the Chunky commercials and NFL films. I think Steve Sabol owes a lot to him because I don't know if it would have been a successful as it was for that long without that voice.

Many people don't know this but......even though he was the announcer tfor the Phils in their 1980 championship season, he did not get to call those games. Back then local announcers were not allowed to call the WS, it was a national thing. So game 5 of the Ws in 2008 was Harrys first series winning call. Turns out it was his last chance, I'm so happy he got to call one.

As a Mets fan, I generally hate anything to do with the Phillies. But since moving to PA two years ago, and being forced to watch only Phillies games, I really came to appreciate Harry Kalas. Always called a great game, and was truly one of the best commentators I have ever heard. This is one Mets fan that will tip his hat to Harry and wish him the best.
