I know about a 2 dimensional gameplan, why do you think we run and pass every game? But in a situation like that, you want your best player to have the ball. Just like in baseball,(3 or 4 years ago) when the Yankees had a small lead in the 9th, did they bring in a middle reliever or did they bring in Mariano Rivera? You want your best player to have the ball in the most crucial situations.
