It's gold because he won a championship. And a championship in a much tougher league (compared to their own level) than an unnamed overrated team that went undefeated in a weak division.

Macedonia Diadochi
Cool Runnings
Iron Curtain
Hell even throw Stalag on that list i guess.
Then you had teams that would have won in other leagues quite easily
Boozehounds
Beograd Black Hand
Baltic Sea Warriors
Then hell still have decent teams in Galatic Sith and 88 Irish that could have been far into the playoffs and possibly won in other leagues.
The only really bad teams in EEBBB#1 were
Coin Ops who is a slowbuild team
Czech Yourself Developmental SSB team
University of Mexico Pumas not sure what their plan was
Those top 8 teams would have handed Area their asses though.
