As great as Elway was he would have ended his career like Marino if TD hadn't been there. That is why I would say he is overrated, plus he did draft Maurice Clarrett in the 3rd round!

Here is my top 5 NFL Head Coaches at the End of 08:
1. Bellachick (NE)
2. Dungy (Ind)
3. Fisher (Ten)
4. Fox (Car)
5. Coughlin (NYG)

Andy Reid (Phi) and Tomlin (Pit) would be on the bubble

No love for Tony Sparano? Parcells was a huge part of the turnaround, but I am perfectly happy to have Sparano as a coach. After a few dismal seasons, it is nice to do well for once.

But honestly, this season does not a contender make. Miami had a cupcake schedule for the most part. If they can do nearly as well next year as they did this year, I will be amazed. They have a crushing one... NE twice, Jets twice, Pit, Indy, Titans, Chargers, Saints, Bucs, Panthers, Atlanta, and even Houston is really a scary team. Jags will be a lot better next year. I haven't seen a single team I would be confident guaranteeing a win next year for the Dolphins...

I like all the rookie coaches, but I need at least 3 years before I can make a true judgement

Brian Billeck was an offensive genius who OC the 1998 Vikings with Cunningham at the helm to a 15-1 record yet he never was able to turn batimore into an avg off. Ozzie Newsome built that defense through the draft and Rex Ryan built that Defense not Billeck. His job was offense and he failed at that. He didn't win a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer, he won a Super Bowl with Ray Lewis and a top 2 defense of all time.

First off being a Bengals fan a have to correct you on one thing right away. Marvin Lewis was the architect of that defense, Rex Ryan became D coordinator after the Super Bowl. You are right Ozzie built that team with some help from Marvin & Billeck. You are kind of pointing to what I'm saying though. Billeck was an offensive coach who didn't have a QB or WRs to work with. And don't underrate that offense either. They were a great rushing team, and they always produced long pass plays at crucial points in the game. Anybody playing that team was going to be mired in a low scoring contest, because that was the offensive plan. Uber-ball control. Basically he was smart enough to reduce the offense to not turning it over, chewing up ridiculous amounts of clock, and letting the D win it for you. If he'd had forced it with the INT king Dilfer and the 3rd rate receiving corps, they'd have given games away through mistakes. The way I see it he was brought in there to be head coach and that's what he did, was coach the talent he was provided. It's just a boring style of play, that doesn't produce great stats and huge margins of victorys. But you can't quibble with a championship.

that great rusing offense didn't score a single TD in 6 of their games including 5 straight!

gm 3.....Sep 17.....BAL 6 @ MIA 19
gm 5.....Oct 01.....BAL 12 @ CLE 0
gm 6.....Oct 08.....BAL 15 @ JAC 10
gm 7.....Oct 15.....BAL 3 @ WAS 10
gm 8.....Oct 22.....TEN 14 @ BAL 6
gm 9.....Oct 29.....PIT 9 @ BAL 6

your right, I forgot about Marvin Lewis. Rex Ryan was there for 10 years, what was his role during the Super Bowl run?

I guess my whole point is that just because a Head Coach won a Super Bowl (Gruden, Switzer, Bellick) doesn't make him great. I am more of a believer of a guy who can win over the course of time. Cower, Fisher, Schotthiemer, Walsh, Bellichick, Gibbs, J. Johnson, Reid, Dungy, Parcells, Holmgram (little on the fence here) just to name a few that come to mind.

Baltimore got their Super Bowl because of one guy...and he is the same reason they did so well this season.

His name is...

Ozzie Newsome!

Here is to hoping Martin Mayhew is just as good!

It's the ring that matters. That team had a slow start. They started 5-4 and went 11-0 the rest of the way. You highlighted up to game 9. Let's take a look from there. They only scored under 27 pts 3 times after that. The reason....Billeck benched Tony Banks and brought in Trent Dilfer late in game 8 and then started him the rest of the way. They lost the next week, then not again the whole season and playoffs. They were only the 3rd team not to commit a turnover in the Super Bowl. As far as winning over time. He was 85-67 over 9 seasons. Also the great running game had Jamal Lewis and Priest Holmes, and combined they gained over 1900 yds in spite of their dismal start.

Here's the rest of the season after week 9:

Week 10 Nov 5 W 27-7 at Cincinnati Bengals
Week 11 Nov 12 W 24-23 at Tennessee Titans
Week 12 Nov 19 W 27-0 vs Dallas Cowboys
Week 13 Nov 26 W 44-7 vs Cleveland Browns
Week 14 Bye Week
Week 15 Dec 10 W 24-3 vs San Diego Chargers
Week 16 Dec 17 W 13-7 at Arizona Cardinals
Week 17 Dec 24 W 34-20 vs New York Jets

Post Season
Wild Card
Playoffs Dec 31 W 21-3 vs Denver Broncos
Divisional
Playoffs Jan 7 W 24-10 at Tennessee Titans
Conference
Championship Jan 14 W 16-3 at Oakland Raiders
Superbowl Jan 28 W 34-7 at New York Giants

Just like this year our defense shut them down while our offense moved the ball up and down on them, but turnovers lost us the game.

Sounds like this years divisonal playoff. Tennesee turned it over 3 times inside the redzone. When we are talking Baltimore I like to look at it as Baltimore caused 3 TOs in the redzone. Because they simply do it too much for it to be accidental.

Also Rex Ryan became DC in 05. Before that was Mike Nolan, and before that Marvin Lewis from 96-01. The Super Bowl team had Marvin as DC, Jack Del Rio LBs coach, Mike Smith asst LBs coach, Rex Ryan D line coach. All head coaches now. Except Nolan who was replaced by Mike Singletary who was LBs coach under Nolan at Baltimore. That makes 5 head coaches who were assistants to Billeck.

That was stupid. I'm not a Tampa Bay fan. I'm not a Chuckie fan either but that was stupid. The guy has all kinds of OLD players on his team. He has an old fart QB (He's still a solid player but He's been hurt a lot lately and He's no more than solid IMO) He has Warrick Dunn as his RB because everyone else is always hurt. He hasn't had much as WR's go. My Jags might have a better WR corp lol and thats sad lol. The guy hasn't had much to work with and they aren't getting much younger as a team. Thats just my take on Tampa.

plus the new fad in the NFL is 30ish year old Coordinators....I agree he didn't have much to work with, but he was 8-3 and failed to make the playoffs
