Warrior General Games

Here are the newly updated power rankings for USA A#2! It seems that the new adjustments made to the passing game, may have resulted in some odd games this week. It's not every week that you see 12 of the 16 league games be shutouts. And this in turn has shaken up the top spots in the power rankings.

For those of you who didn't see the post week 3 PR I did, it's buried somewhere in the USA A#2 thread. But, I computed these rankings using several categories of statistics found from the League Stats page.

The formatting looks like complete crap, since these forums don't use a fixed width font, and they don't recognize (as far as I know) html table coding....so if anyone has any suggestions for how to better format these, please let me know. Also, I plan on doing these every week, so come back to visit the forums after every game.

I actually did the calculations.

Without taking too much text to explain them, I gathered up the data for a bunch of offensive (17), defensive (12), and ST (6) statistics. I might be off on the number of stats for each category, as I haven't gone back to count as I've gone thru a couple of versions today....

But then I rank each team for each stat, then take the average of all the rankings for each side of the ball (ie. so the offensive ranking is the average ranking for all 17 stats for a team) So if you're terrible in one stat, but really good (compared tot he rest of the league) in other stats, you'll have a higher ranking.

The offense, Def, and ST rankings are then used to calculate a weighted average where offense and Def are worth 7/16ths each and the ST score is worth 2/16ths. This is the overall average.

I didn't actually intend to have this posted yet, but someone jumped the gun on me....lol

If people are really interested in what stats I used, let me know and I'll post them.

Basically, I'd seen that other leagues had people doing power rankings for them, but no one had done anything for us yet. So I took it upon myself to get it done. Does that mean that it's the best, or that it's infallible....no, not by any means. I'd be happy to have some positive feedback/criticism if it will help make the end product better.

Sure thing. I'm using excel to pull the data from the GLB website. This is nice, as it allows me to have the calculations automatically updated, so I only have a little bit of data manipulation to do in order to post the rankings.

To actually calculate the rankings, I calculate the rank of each team for lots of categories.

For offense I use:
Wins (ties count as 0.5)
TD's scored per game
Passing Yards per game
yards per completion good
completion percentage
passing TD's per game
Interceptions thrown bad
Dropped passes bad
Rushing Yards Per Game
Yards per carry
Rushing Td's per game
Fumbles lost bad
Turnovers - given away
Yards after catch
Pts scored/points allowed
ratio of off to def plays
Pancakes good
# punts/per possession (lower is better)

Defense:
Def Sacks good
Def Hurries good
Def Missed tkl bad
Def PD good
Def Int good
Def FF good
Def Fum Recov good
Def scoring good
TD's given up per game
Passing YPG against
Rushing YPG given up

and ST:
FG's made per game
FG percentage
FG's given up per game
ST touchdowns
KR average
Punt Return Average


The one thing that I don't like about the rankings the way I'm doing them right now, is that everything has an absolute max and min (you can't be ranked higher than 1st, or lower than 32) so it makes it difficult for a really great team to excel beyond the next closest competitor. (or for a really poor team to show up that much further behind).

I'm also counting all of the categories as being equally weighted right now, although I'm planning on changing that at some point. Because (as just one possible example) the total points you allow should count for more than how many passes you've defended. But I just haven't had the time to implement that in a manner that is reasonable yet. I've only been working on this since Thursday I think (maybe Wed...) So it's still a pretty early stage product, but people still seem to enjoy it, so I don't have a problem putting out what I know is an imperfect product in this kind of situation.

So if anyone has any suggestions about how to rank a category (and maybe a bit of why you think so) or other categories that you think should be here, let me know. I am somewhat limited by the stats that GLB makes available, because i just don't have the time to go thru every game and calculate the 3rd down conversion percentage for every team, so I may reject a suggestion on that basis, but go ahead and suggest it, because there might be a way to pull out the data from what's there, and I just haven't seen it yet.
