Some big games this week and some other good ones. A true conference favorite will be annointed this week and some other teams may see their seasons put in jeopardy. Important games coming up.
Game of the Week #1: ......Its About Time
Osaka vs. Newcastle:
This game has been lining up for some time and will provide a true measuring stick of who will be the conference favorite. Both teams have been playing well all year. To me, Newcastle has a better offense while Osaka has the better defense. If Newcastle does not commit turnovers deep in their end and make Osaka drive the field the entire game, I think Newcastle will win. If the Osaka defense gives the Osaka offense a short field with some turnovers, Osaka will win this game. Two good teams and it wouldn't surprise me to see either of them win. I would also not guarantee the winner of this game will win the conference, but they will justifiably be the favorite. My prediction is a close game throughout with Newcastle winning by a TD. I wouldn't bet any money though......just looking forward to seeing this game.
Game of the Week #2: ........Reality Check?
Vanuatu vs. Wake Island
The Volcano have made a nice recovery since the beating Osaka put on them early in the season with some solid wins over good Convict and SAFS teams. Now they get a chance to play what I consider the most overachieving team in the league so far in Wake Island. The Destroyers have surprised me against Tuvalu and beat Tonga handily, but they still seem like the team most likely to take a 2nd half fall from grace. This game with Vanuatu will either cement that feeling or just prove it wrong altogether. They Destroyers did not fare well in their last matchup against a proven good team and I am not expecting much difference this week. The Destroyers are a solid team, but I don't think they match up well with the better teams in the conference....at least this season. I think the Volcano win this game handily by 3 TD's. Vanuatu shoves the red pill down the Destroyer's throats this game.
Game of the Week #3.......Separation occurs here
Chillicothe vs. Tuvalu
How can I be down on a 4-3 team.........2-26 is why. That is the record of the 4 teams that Tuvalu beat this season. They have not beaten a good team yet and haven't been that close in the losses. They have a very tough 2nd half of the schedule and will have to win at least 2 tough games to make the playoffs. This game will be a measuring stick to see what the chances of that happening are. The Matadors don't have to win, but they better be close. The Convicts will be celebrating after this game though. The Chillicothe Offense has been outstanding this year and the Tuvalu defense will need a good game plan to hold the Convicts to a total the Tuvalu offense can deal with. Maybe this is a wake-up game for the Matadors...we will see. What I see is the Convicts by 2 TD's....and the Matadors standing near the edge.
Interesting Games
Antarctica vs. Tonga
The Seals squeaked out a big win against a good SAFS team last week and now face a Terror team that may be better than their record. They sport a win over Gold Coast and a close loss to UGSD in the last 2 games. They will play the Seals tough. Can the Terror learn from the SAFS offensive game plan last week against the Seals? I hope not! If the Terror can get some turnovers, this could be a very close game. I don't think the Seals will give up that many points again this week though. Tonga gives it a good effort but comes up short as Antarctica wins by 2 TD's.
Hattrick vs. Penrith:
Neither of these teams is going anywhere this year, but both are still showing up every week and putting in the time/effort. These teams are the best of the teams in the lower tier of Zeta, and I think this will be a close, well played game. In the end, I see Hattrick pulling out a late win with a FG. Good luck to both of these teams and one will come up with a well deserved win.
Chalk these ones up:
SAFS vs. Drunk Fu
SAFS get a much deserved break here in our non-game of the week. SAFS by lots.
USGD vs. Sydney
The Dynasty squish the fish here as they win one they are supposed to. USGD by lots.
Gold Coast vs. Cairns
The Fire are competing, but don't have enough to hold back the Samaurai in this game. Gold Coast by lots.
