It is a cold frosty October morning on Bow Street, as the Runners prepare to face their conference opponent, the Beers from Belgium. The Beers are not an intimidating opponent, only one season removed from being 0-16. What was there record last season? Five wins? They were predicted to be fighting against relegation this season. Bow Street had nothing to worry about. They hadn’t lost a game yet, and this was not going to be their first. The Runners home crowd is roaring, and the players are fired up as they race out of the tunnel. Then the Beers players come out and the crowd erupts into a chorus of loud boos. The Beers players look drunk! They stagger and stumble their way to the visitor’s sideline, and have to be prodded out onto the field for the opening kickoff.
The Beers are noticeably hungover, and although they gain a few lucky yards, they quickly lose a fumble on their first possession:

This would be the first of three drunken fumbles for the Beers, and things don't look good.

The Runners confidently gain a few yards but it is now 3rd and two. The Beer’s coaches look concerned and call a timeout. “Bring out the kegs!” yells the head coach. The players gather around and gulp as much as they can before the timeout is over. Their spirits seem to lift and they break out into unintelligible drunken cheers. “Look at those fools,” say the Bow Street players.

LB Tupac Machiavelli flips upside down and does a kegstand. As the time out comes to an end, he promptly flops off the keg and stumbles out to the field. It is a run play, and with the fresh beer flowing through his veins, Tupac takes the FB on head first and then tackles the runner for a loss.

Maybe there is hope for the Beers after all!

The Beers regain possession and methodically trickle down the field like a drop of beer sliding down the rim of a frosty mug. Boss Boston leads the way, and caps off the drive with a short plunge behind blocking so good that it can only be achieved with drunken strength.

The teams battle back and forth, the determined but sober Bow Street Runners trading blows with the Beers, but on every crucial 3rd down play, the Beers seem to have the edge.
The Beers finally break the stalemate and move into the redzone with a sharp pass from Kimbo to Bud Deisel over the middle

A few plays later, the TD seems almost easy as Speedy Greedy gathers the ball in like a giant sip of brew:

It’s now 14-0 and the crowd is stunned. How could this happen??

Bow Street becomes determined and begins to claw back into the game. Every time they are close to making a move though, the Beers rally and chug full glasses, then come onto the field with renewed energy.
On a crucial 3rd down play in the beginning of the fourth quarter, Steven Pepper charges in and sacks the QB, ending yet another Bow Street drive.

The unbeaten Runners prove their strength though, and pull within a few points, punching it in on 4th and goal

Do the beers crumple? No they simply go back to Speedy Greedy and hit him in stride for 2 big first downs

Smell L Cool J proves he’s more than just a backup as he follows the determined lead blocking of Adrian Gerhardt and picks up another first down.

Finally, the powerful blockers for the Beers part the defense and Boss steps untouched into the end zone.

Final Score: 21-10

“What are we going to do now to celebrate?” Boss cheerfully asks his offensive line.
“BEER, BEER, BEER!” they yell, and the cool golden amber liquid flows like a river…

I am calling shenanigans on that last play...I just checked my D AI and there is no damn way in hell we should be in base D. The AI tester tells me 100% goalline cover 0.
FFS. 43 cover 2 zone against a running team with the ball inside the 5? Surely there isn't a coach in the world boneheaded enough to call zone in that situation...

I'd also love an explanation of what the hell the covering Linebacker is doing on those pass plays...

Not that it would have probably helped us. I have only had a cursory look at the stats so far, but how Belgian win like that when we win the Turnovers and get pretty much the same amount of offence (despite having completely keyed against the run) I don't know. One of those things. Football is a strange game. Well done to the Beers for knocking us off our unbeaten pedestal. I hope we get a chance at revenge in the playoffs.
