When I was growing up, everyone thought America needed more political engagement from it's citizens because our voting turnout was so much lower than other countries.

Boy was that ever wrong.

There is a Gallup survey from a few years ago where they asked voters leaving an election precinct to choose the correct answer on "how long does a US Senator serve for?"

About 1/3rd of them got it wrong - and these were people leaving with "I voted" stickers where a Senate race was on the ballot. So they just voted to make someone 1 of 100 people in the country with a great deal of power and they apprently have forgotten every US history class they took in primary school.

Same thing with Duke and UNC showing that candidate positions and character are not the #1 factor voters choose on it's political party affiliation (they swipe tested ficticious cadndiates with randomly generated positions on 10 issues) biggest factor was whether you put at D or an R next to the persons name.

It's candidly not that those people are necessarily "stupid" or rubes - it's that they don't really pay attention consistetnly and like all knowledge it atrophies. I mean I passed Calculus - if you wanted me to do it now - I would need serious refresher. If you only pay attention once every 4 years for a couple months it's not surprising that results get weird.
