My question exactly.

If this means freeing up WRs to start blocking immediately on the snap instead of running forward a bit before freeing up to block, that's going to be a good change.

Or that WR3s may actually do something when they're left uncovered

I can get behind both of these trains of thought

Well I think that takes the strategy out of things so I would rather nothing happen differently for a pass play. Especially for the sake of zone coverage that already doesn't line up a CB vs. any WR.

Unless you're not psychic, and hence don't actually know where the ball carrier is going.

Yes, defenders should run along the line mirroring the ball carrier slightly ahead of them if they can. Pursuit roll. Then Footwork-based shuffling turning to Sprinting if they need to.

No, they should not run well in front of the ball carrier and then turn and go to a location that they'd have no way of knowing is the eventual path of the ball carrier since a 'real' ball carrier would be free to turn the ball up at any point before they get to where the defender is now waiting for the easy tackle for loss.

Why there isn't cutbacks is a whole other discussion. But yes, they don't happen enough.

That would actually break things back to run being somewhat OP if you're going to have the defenders able to run plays faster than the offense. They'd go where they know the ball carrier is going. The ball carrier would decide, "Frak that," and cut it up inside the now wildly out of position defender.

Which is kinda part of why your psychic defenders idea is a bad fix. It works now, but if ever you do fix cutbacks, it's going to be seriously broken.

It isn't psychic defending for defenders to go where a ball carrier is headed. On a sweep play in real life football the linebackers will usually run parallel to the line of scrimmage, which could be a spot where the ball carrier wont be for a few seconds. That is just basic football you don't have to be psychic. It doesn't mean that spot the defender is running to is where the ball carrier will end up either.

Ya. That's not what they do in GLB2.

They run ahead of the ball carrier down the line, turn the corner, and then run to a spot that the ball carrier will arrive in a bit.

Again, if you tried to pull that stunt in real life football, the back is just going to turn up the field before he gets to you, and next practice, your coach will make you run wind sprints for guessing and not actually playing your assignment.

Ya I mean that is what real defenders do. They pursue to make the HB cut back to the middle. That is the entire point. You don't want them to reach the sidelines before you.

Except in this you already know the HB is scripted to go outside and will not cut back, whereas in real life (or GLB) a cut back inside by a HB could get him 6 yards.

Corn has agreed that cutting back doesn't happen, so why would we give the defense that psychic power that he's not going to cut back too?

I would just assume this sim evolves from the HB's running into the sidelines regardless of how they are defended at some point.

Not sure if I do, never did in glb1.

Uh they cut up field all the time in GLB1. Like...all the time.

If it's not in the game now, why would we make a sim based around something that is going to be implemented/fixed?

That's my main point. I sure hope it does too, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

Nobody is looking for a Barry Sanders joystick play out of this. But if a defender forces you to cut up that makes sense. I could show you an infinite amount of GLB1 replays where the guy cuts up rather than heads straight for the sidelines.
