Fusion, Edge, new Taurus, so the Milan, Sable, MKZ, and MKX would be up there as well.

Aren't most of these the same cars? That's one of the problems with GM and Ford: they have several brands of the exact same vehicle. They're actually competing with their own brands.

The Explorer marks a huge blemish on Ford's record. The damn thing was a true piece of shit. That vehicle is solely responsible for America's "SUV" addition. From the Explorer summoned the Excusion, Expedition, Escalade, and Hummer. All of wich have no SUV capabilities besides picking up kid from soccer practice. While American companies focused on trying to build the biggest SUV, foreign companies focused on fuel economy and quality. I hope the American companies don't fail, but they certainly deserve to for failing to adapt to the market. It's like they've had blinders on for the last 15 years.

That is the simple. The truth is that the foreign car companies are not solely focused in the US market. We are the only culture that went SUV crazy. The American market is the largest market for US car companies, of course they are going to focus on what the public wanted. The Japanese and European companies started making SUVs because of their popularity based off the success of the US models. Japanese and Europeans have the advantage in smaller, efficient vehicles because they sell those to the rest of the world, that is a huge market. Apparently the American makers do have smaller cars for foreign markets, but they are reluctant to introduce them in the US because no one wants a compact car.

What's wrong with making a big car that will take around the whole family (we have 10 month old twin girls and plan on having one more) and at the same time get decent gas milage. I currently have a Pilot and love it (but even it could get better milage). We wanted to get a vehicle that would grow with our family and for anyone who says that a small car would be fine for us, try getting two rear facing car seats into your small vehicle. ;~)

I have also owned an Dodge Neon, an Acura RSX, a Jeep Liberty, and a Pontiac G6. The only two that didn't have annoying little problems were the Acura and the Pilot. Admittedly, we got rid of the Acura to lower our car payment, and the Pilot is still kind of new, but they (both Honda) seem to me (as someone who has owned both) to be of much better quality than the GM and Chrysler vehicles. Also when we sold the Acura after a couple years we got more money (in relation to what we owed) than we got for the Liberty after almost 4 years. And before anyone mentions the loan terms, both were 60 month loans and the interest rate was higher on the Acura (zero percent on the Jeep). I'll probably keep buying Honda, but I admittedly have not owned a Ford and I love the redesigned Mustang (but not as much as the new corvette stingray prototype).

It's ashame that it will probably never become a reality (they always screw up concept cars before they go to production - e.g. see Chevy Volt - http://jalopnik.com/5043578/2010-chevy-volt-concept-versus-reality)

SUV marketing is what American companies have been pushing for years....see Hummer. It's just recently they've switched to MPG. The push for MPG should have started a long time ago.

What about vehicles like the Pontiac Aztec? American car companies have just done a horrible job on so many levels for so many years. Their roots in American culture have carried them so far, but how much is the public going to take? How many junkers or flop vehicles to you have to own before you switch brands?

I know my wifes's next car is going to be either a Lexus or Acura for their reliability/resale value. I'll just keep my 2000 Jeep XJ until the frame rusts out. I've actally been lucky with the vehicle. So many other owners of the same vehicle have had problems with cracked cylinder heads....another quality problem.

I really liked my Acura RSX and may eventually buy another one. I like both the TSX and the RL as far as cars go, and I like the MDX for a mid+ size SUV. I've actually heard bad things about the interiors on Lexus vehicles.

I think Honda/Acura has higher quality than Toyota/Lexus. We'll see. We really like the Lexus IS250 for the AWD. Infinity would be a choice, but we don't have a local Nissan or Infinity dealership.

cough... cough... the explore does suck. It is bullet proof motor and trans wise, but all the peripherals suck. My wife has been driving an Edge since they came out and other than a burnt out bulb, not a single problem. It is a premier with the awesome sun roof and navigation so it has all the good stuff to break as well. It also rides great and is as quite as can be. My grandparents have an explore and it is a hole different story.........................

I do like my Escape though it has started nickel and dimeing me now that its over 100k in miles. Thought todays vehicles with proper maint would go much further before that started happening. Bearings and Tie Rods, igniton coils etc.

Got something in your throat?

I don't know about bulletproof.

Consumer reports reliability rating for the Explorer:

And the Honda Accord(for perspective):

of all the cars mentioned, I would actually say the escape is the one I personally see in the shop the fewest amount of times. Other than that silly recall with the head liner Foam. OSHA said it was too hard. LOL. At about 100k replace the pcv tubes and intake gaskets for vacuum leaks, tune it up and the rest hardly ever has problems. Great cars. I think about 5 or 6 of my techs have them as well cause they just seem to not break and get great millage for an SUV.

Good to know, should be all good to go then. Was thinking of trading it in but what is the sense seeing as its paid off with only 110k on it. 3 years ago I probably wouldnt have even though of it, just sign the papers on a new vehicle, now with the economy the way it is I think running it until it falls apart is probably the best way to go.

I see escape's with over 200k from Progressive insurance. We have the account with them. Actually, their explores made it over 200k as well. LOL.

It's a buyers market for a new car. Don't know if they'll give you much on the trade in though...
