replays like that make you wonder why anyone would bother with cover 2. Where the hell is the SS going?

He's going to cover his deep half of the field and make sure it's clear. What would you want him to do, stick with the only deep threat anywhere nearby? C'mon!

hahaha, yup. I think that's my biggest problem with zones atm. There's no hedging by the cover guy in the zone. They always play exactly in the middle of the zone if there's nothing specifically running through it. If zones are ever gonna work, the zone cover guy needs to have the intelligence to know threats to the zone that aren't currently in the zone, or when it's OK to leave the zone and continue coverage on someone that came through it when there's clearly no future threats to the zone. The limited scope of the zone defender right now makes them very difficult to use outside of specific anti-pitch type defenses or plays where you know the middle of a zone just happens to line up with the opponents favorite passing route's hot zone.

Ya, zone coverages need a pre-snap read that can shift coverages as well as make sure there is a body on every body.
It's a pretty straightforward algorithm when you're teaching players how to do this, so I suspect eventually it'll make it's way into the game.
'Course, there are differing ideas on exactly what shifts need to happen, and it's entirely possible that some of the tricks people use zone coverages now would be totally broken by using actual zone reads, but I think it's more than worth fixing in order to give defensive coordinators more options.

I don't think it's even got to be that fancy. They just need to have some sort of threat read on receivers potentially coming into their zone, and use that to position in their zones instead of just automatically squatting the middle of the zone until a receivers route comes into it.
That said, pass power as a skill would be useful in shortening the window of opportunity for a zone defender jumping a pass. Assuming zone defenders do one day have the ability to actually get to the catch point of a pass reliably in time.

Getting that right is probably pretty complicated. However, once you have it, you can use Zone Awareness to make the threat reads "fuzzy" so that you might screw it up, which makes it more interesting.

Scrim against other team that ran some zone. We had 3 20+ passes against their zone but they did have a nice pick- http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/replay/41100/256590

It is a fun pick, but it doesn't change the fact the targeted receiver was open for a first down and the QB just overthrew him. Zones are like a blind squirrel. Every now and then they still find an acorn.
Let's breakdown that play specifically though. CB Caughin Corner doesn't need to be floating out on the top side of the field all by himself the whole play. He should be hedge over to the edge of his zone to deal with the TE dragging across as soon as the TE leaves the middle underneath zone covered by LB Mike Vrabel. As it is, the TE is wide open, just not targeted due to being short of the first one 3rd down.
Also bad is how LB Norbert Hensley just cuts loose the targeted receiver. Dude's releasing him to nobody. The 3 deep coverage guys only turn to deal with him as the pass is thrown. There's no effective handoff there. The LB should stay with him until he's handed off to another coverage man in the next zone layer.
So two of the 5 receivers go completely unnacounted for at the critical moment of the play. A bad throw bails out the defense.

It clearly wasn't. You clearly made an implication that blind squirrels have a rather difficult time finding acorns...

Well after a rough year mostly due to changing the team to a run first team and the team's best receiver being inactive then cut. GunSlinger is back and ready to roll with 62 pass power gonna see how it goes... http://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/player/6964

54 Pass Power for me. Gunslinger has good Pass Power but lacking Stamina and Leadership (Leadership to reduce stamina loss of offensive team mates). Gunslinger will have 10 or 15 stamina by the end of the 2nd and 4th quarters.
My QB had 6 20+ yard passes in recent pickup game. Its a pickup game though, i'll have to wait for next season games to evaluate much better.
