I got my degree on film!

Whats wrong with w3c schools? Lots of good basics in there if you're just starting to learn.

I started coding before there even was an internet so I couldnt really google teachmyself. Bought magazines, entered prewritten code from them, changed shit around to see what happened!

Luckily it's gotten easier...

Well, when you started doesn't matter that much.

Old languages are fading and new ones are popping up. If you got a job using Unity next week or something, you'd still need to "learn" syntax of that. And hello internet.

The main thing with programming is logic and structure, and that can't be taught. You have to learn that on your own path.

My post was more a reflexion on the difference between picking up programming now as opposed to 30 years ago. Besides, you pick up syntax of a new language pretty fast. Especially now that you can google the exakt errors you get, not like C64 basic where you got "Syntax Error" and had to guess what was wrong.

Let me say also that I really love the way programming has becomes easier and tools have become more powerfull. This gives us alot of indie games we'd never have gotten before, Like this one. l337-dudes scoff at VB when in reality it is an excellent tool for getting great ideas into code.

What do you mean structure "cant be taught" btw? Ofcourse it can.

Meh, structure probably wasn't the right word.

There's kind of a lot about programming that isn't tangible knowledge. Critical thinking, being inventive enough to solve the given puzzle. Like, having a paintbrush isn't the same as being an artist.

I don't know. I look at programming as art. Solving problems with the prettiest looking solution. Anybody can slop together some code, but the best programmers make it look pretty while doing it.

That's what I love about Perl. Lots of nice looking shortcuts and isn't strongly typed. Having to cast every variable is so ugly
