I taught 6th graders today that in the presence of an outlier, median is the better measure, because that one guy who couldn't get it off would increase the "average" duration per dude. Except I used "pieces of bacon you ate this morning that you did not share with your teacher" as data because today was all-academic breakfast.

humble request:
by the exact same token, can you please teach your students that standard deviation is overly sensitive to large outliers and that most often (especially in this digital age) they should be using mean deviation instead?

here's a decent writeup -- https://www.edge.org/response-detail/25401

Get more data and all your problems go away.

MAD is part of 6th grade curriculum.
Wrong age group IMO, more appropriate for 8th or 12th, nonetheless, USA USA

Well, assuming you have a normal distribution to begin with, more data will depress the deviation of any one outlier term.

But there I go, making assumptions...

yes, and a rather large one at that. a very curious move from someone who was too nit-picky to answer my bob question earlier. pick a lane.

also, had you read what you replied to, you would realize that speaking of "the deviation" requires some clarification. read the article i linked to learn more.

that said, ayone who has sat through the first lecture of an intro to stats class would agree that increasing sample size tends to decrease sample error. but that doesn't address what you replied to and it certainly doesn't solve 'all problems' in actual practice.
